6. Brief Resume of Intended Work:

6.1 Need for the Study

Kasa is frequently encountered in day to day Pediatric practice and it is also a symptom of various diseases of respiratory system. Recurrent attacks of this problem lead to adverse effects on the routine activities of the children.

Though Kaphaja Kasa may not be a life threatening entity,it increasinglyhampers the regular activities. If neglectedit may results in a series of complications. Etiology of Kaphaja Kasa ranges from allergens to infections. Cough occurs in association withacute upper respiratory tract infection, acute pharyngitis, acute bronchitis and chronic sinusitis, all of which rankamong the top 10 reasons for visiting family physicians4.

Oral administration of the medicines is one among the important Shamana line of treatment which is very easily administered, well accepted and alsoeffective inchildren. Many herbal formulations have been explored and proven effective in the management of Kaphaja Kasa. As Ayurveda is catching up globally still more exploration of new formulations is essential to meet the demand.

A lotof research study has been carried out on Bharangi, Rasna and Karkata Shringiindividually on different types of Kasa. In Haritha Samhithathere is specific indication of the combination with above three drugs especially in the treatment of Kasa inchildren1. Hence the study is intended to evaluate the effect of Bharngyadi churna on Kaphaja Kasa in pediatric clinical practice.

6.2 Review of literature

All the Classical and contemporary information including the web site, mentioningthe drugs and the disease along with the proposed clinical study will be thoroughlyrecorded and reviewed.

Classical review on various aspects of Kaphaja Kasa is done from Charaka Samhitha2

Various aspects of choorna kalpana is explained in Sarangadhara Samhitha3

Explanation about Cough is reviewed from Office approach to the diagnosis of chronic cough4

Properties and action of drugs in the formulation is explained in Bhavaprakasha nighantu5 etc…

6.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the efficacy of Bharngyadi Choorna in BalaKaphaja Kasa.
  • To highlight the formulation said in Harita Samhita to relieve Kaphaja Kasa in children as it is not used commonly.

6.4 Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant effect of Bharngyadi churna on BalaKaphaja Kasa.

Ha: There is significant effect ofBharngyadi churna on BalaKaphaja Kasa.

7. Materials and Methods

7.1 Source of Data

Sample Source:

Patients attending OPDand IPD of Dept of Kaumarabritya, Alva’s Ayurveda medical college hospitaland other referrals with the complaint of Kaphaja Kasa will beincluded for the proposed study.

7.2 Method of Collection of Data

A single blind clinical study with minimum of 30 patientsbetween the agesof 6 to 12 years, fulfilling the inclusion criteria will beincidentallyselected and assigned into one group.

Diagnostic Criteria

Productive coughwith sputum of white in colour and thick in consistency are takenfor the study.

Inclusion Criteria:
  • Age group between 05 - 12 years.
  • Patients with Kaphaja Kasa of less than 15 days duration will be included.
  • Patients irrespective of sex, religion and socio-economic status are taken.
  • Productive cough associated with or without othersymptoms described in the context of Kaphaja Kasa will be included.
Exclusion Criteria:
  • All other types of Kasa except Kaphaja Kasa.
  • Kaphaja Kasa as anubandha lakshana (associated symptom) in other Systemic illness like T.B, Pneumonia, Juvenile D.M, HIV etc.
  • Patients below the age group of 05 years and above 12years.
Procedure of administration of drug:

Diagnosed patients of Kaphaja Kasa will be administeredBharngyadi churna in the dosage of 8gms/day in 4 equally divided dosesalong with honeyafter food for 12days.

Observation period:

The drug combination will be administered for a periodof maximum12days and thepatients will be assessed on every 3 days.

Assessment criteria:

Detailed proforma will be done for the assessmentof both subjective and objectiveparameters. The data obtained will beanalyzed statistically.

7.3Does the study require any investigations or interventions to be conducted on patients or other humans or animals? Is so please describe briefly.

This study will be conducted clinically on human subjects. No animal experimentation will be carried out.

  • Blood: routine examinations
  • Other investigations will be carried out, if necessary.
