El Espinazo del Diablo (Devil’s Backbone)(2001)

Guillermo del Toro film, set during the Spanish Civil War, centers on Carlos, an orphan taken to a school for the children of those who died fighting against fascism. War surrounds the school, violence infests it from within, and Carlos sets out to avenge the death of another boy, whose ghost starts to haunt him.

Reds(1981)

Radical American correspondent John Reed

gets caught up in the spirit, euphoria, and aftermath

of Russia's 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. The film

depicts the myriad of problems that infected the

revolution and features notable historical figures

such as Emma Goldman.

Bastards of the Party(2006)

Cle “Bone” Sloan explores the origins of the Bloods and Crips in L.A., tracing gang history from late 1940s, when southern blacks started to move into the predominantly white L.A. area, to the rise and demise of the Black Panthers, to the formation of what is currently the culture of gangs.

This feminist romp is said to have influenced riot grrl, depicting the rise-and-fall chronicle of a Pennsylvanian all girl punk band called the Stains.

Well Done, Now Sod Off!(2001)

Documentary about the band Chumbawamba, showing their anarcho-punk roots, their commercial success, and their funny attitude through it all.

There Is No Authority But Yourself(2006)

Candid and behind the scenes interview footage from aging Crass members and archival footage, about the lifestyle, politics, and history of the seminal anarcho-punk band.

JUNE 17

Matewan(1987)

Dramatization of real events, Sayles’ shows oppression of the West Virginian miners by the coal companies, the Wobblies’ attempt to unite different ethnic groups, and the debate among the miners over the use of violence.

Over the Edge(1979)

In a planned community where there is nothing for the kids to do, they begin to create their own entertainment -which involves vandalism, theft, and general hooliganism. After an unsympathetic response from the community after an incident when a cop kills one of the kids, the kids decide that’s all they will take.

Is the Crown At War With Us?(2002)

In the summer of 2000, in New Brunswick's Miramichi Bay, Canadian federal fisheries officers aggressively attacked a group of Mi'kmaq fishermen. Examining the conflict and its complex roots in the Native history of the Atlantic Coast, the film shows a community under siege.

Bamako(2006)

In Mali, a trial court has been set up right in the middle of a residential courtyard. African civil society spokesmen have taken proceedings against the World Bank and the IMF whom they blame for Africa's woes. Amidst the pleas and the testimonies, life goes on in the surrounding houses.

A History of U.K. Anarcho-punk during the years 1980-1984. Details the progression from punk being seen as radical fashion to a lifestyle and force of social change. The interview footage is laced with both audio and visual music performances.

Banished(2007)

Between 1860 and 1920 hundreds of U.S. counties expelled their black residents. The pattern was depressingly similar in almost all cases. A black man was rumored to have assaulted a white woman, was lynched, and then white rioters attacked black neighborhoods with guns and firebombs until the entire black population was driven out. This documentary travels to 3 towns where this type of ethnic cleansing took place.

Smoke Signals(1998)

Based on short stories by Sherman Alexie, This film revolves around Victor, a native American youth, who has to travel from his reservation in Idaho to Arizona to pick up the ashes of a father he hadn’t seen in 20 yrs. Accompanying him is Thomas, who Victor never really liked, but who has the money to fund their trip. The movie is about relationships, forgiveness, and what it’s like to grow up Native American.

Barefoot Gen(1983)

This animated portrayal of the dropping of the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima offers lessons in history, humanity and compassion. In the wake of the bombing a young boy, Gen must learn to survive without most of his family and with the horrors that surround him.
