WEB QUEST

SUNNY DAYS

7th Grade

Introduction:
Summer days are filled with fun and adventure. Children are doing lots of outdoor activities. They can be playing at the pool, on the front lawns, at a park, camping, or even fishing. Anyway you look at it they are outside in the bright and hot sun. Overexposing yourself can be quite dangerous. Do you think that all children your age know the possible dangers of the sun? Probably not.

Task:
The task is that you and your group (three in a group) are going to make a brochure to inform your fellow school mates about the harmful effects of the sun and how they can protect themselves. The idea is to help the students in your school, so you need to make sure that your brochure covers everything important about the sun.

Process:
Everyone in your group is going to design a page in the brochure. Collectively, you are going to have to work together to put the whole brochure together and come up with the name of it. This is a group effort and it will be graded on the quality of information that it includes and the overall appearance. The brochure is going to include:

  • A section on the different types of rays and facts about the sun.

List the type of rays and explain them. Give some facts about why the sun is getting worse for your skin (ozone layer). List any other factoids that would be interesting for students to know.

  • A section on skin cancer from the sun and how to detect it.

List the types of cancer and tell how you would know if you had it. Describe why you should be looking at moles and other spots on your skin.

  • A section on how to protect yourself from the sun. This person should talk about clothing you should wear, lotions, and times you should be careful about.

*****I gave a few pointers that each member should include. You should add more then I suggested. Be creative!!

Some possible web sites that you can use are:

Resources:
In addition to the websites given, you can use any other website that pertains to the subject area. You can also use books, magazines, and interviews.

Evaluation:
Like I previously said, you will be evaluated both on the quality of information you provided and also on how the overall brochure looks. Make sure that your group members work hard to get their section done and that they put forth their best effort because I am also going to be grading on how well you worked together.

60 pts for the quality of information

30 pts for the overall appearance

10 pts for teamwork

Overall 100 points!!!! WORK HARD!

Conclusion:

Was the overall experience a good one? Explain why yes or no.

Did your group work well together?

Would you want to do this type of thing again?
