Directions: Listen to The Enormous Crocodile. Take notes on the setting, plot, and theme.

Students do not need to label the plot events as part of each step of the Story Plotline. Teacher will use the Story Plotline to guide their thinking only.

Setting / The biggest, brownest, muddiest river in Africa.
A town surrounded by jungle in Africa.
Plot / (Description)
-The Enormous Crocodile lives in a muddy river in the jungles of Africa.
-He and the Notsobig One are deciding what to eat for lunch.
(Rising Action/Foreshadowing)
-The Enormous Crocodile tells the other animals of the jungle that he is going to travel through the jungle and into town to eat juicy little children.
-The other animals of the jungle are horrified by his plans.
(Climax)
-The Enormous Crocodile has thought of four clever tricks to trap and eat little children in the town.
-He disguises himself as a coconut tree, a seesaw, a wooden animal on a merry-go-round, and a park bench.
-Each of the jungle animals, Humpy-Rumpy the Hippopotamus, Muggle-Wump the Monkey, Roly-Poly Bird, and Trunky the Elephant ruin the Enormous Crocodile’s tricks and stop him from eating the children just in time.
(Falling Action)
-Trunky picks up the Enormous Crocodile by the tail and tells him that he and the other jungle animals have had enough of his clever tricks.
(Resolution)
-Trunky the Elephant swings the Enormous Crocodile faster and faster around his head. He lets go, sending the Enormous Crocodile soaring into space. The Enormous Crocodile smashes into the sun and sizzles like a sausage.
Theme / Greed: The Enormous Crocodile is not happy just eating fish from the muddy river. He insists on eatinginnocent little children to satisfy his appetite.
Manners / Conduct – Bullying vs. Kindness: The Enormous Crocodile is a bully. He threatens and scares the other animals with his size and his teeth. He tries to bite Trunky, Muggle-Wump the Monkey, and Roly-Poly Bird. The other animals show kindness by saving the children of the town.
Cooperation andProblem Solving: The jungle animals work together to save the children from the Enormous Crocodile.
Evil vs. Good: The Enormous Crocodile is an evil monster who wants to eat children. The other jungle animals are good and kind because they want to help save and protect the children of the town.
Size – Big vs. Small: The Enormous Crocodile is humongous, threatening, and frightening. Even though the other animals are smaller than he is, they stand up to him to protect the children.
“Just Desserts” – getting what is deserved: The Enormous Crocodile is a nasty, horrible animal who only wants to harm others. He deserves what he gets when he is thrown into space and is sizzled when he hits the sun.
Foolishness and Pride:The Enormous Crocodile thinks he is the cleverest crocodile in the entire river because of the clever plans he has for catching children. He is so prideful that he tells the other animals of his plans. His bragging is foolish because the other animals are able to foil his plans.
