Quick Facts about Oakton Online Courses and MAT 140 Online

for further information, see www.oakton.edu/online

Online courses are delivered via the Internet. There are no videos for MAT 140 beyond those available for selected problems within MyLabsPlus, the online homework and quiz delivery system.

Students are required to have a computer and Internet connection and any additional hardware/software as specified for a particular course. Technical requirements are listed at www.oakton.edu/online/tech/techmenu.htm. Students are free to use the computers at Oakton to complete their homework and quizzes.

Students must also possess a minimum level of computer knowledge to function in an online learning environment. They need to be comfortable with the windows (or mac) environment and with navigating online. Additionally, they should be able to use email and a variety of search engines.

Online courses provide students the scheduling flexibility of accessing a course from anywhere at any time, but they also require students to be self-disciplined and organized and to have excellent time management skills. Students must take charge of their own learning and advocate for themselves (be aware of all deadlines, seek tutoring when necessary, e-mail questions, visit the professor during office hours, etc).

The registration period for online courses is the same as for campus-based courses. Students are not able to register for an online course beyond the late registration period.

To be successful in an online learning environment, students must keep up with all course deadlines and actively participate in learning activities.

The course content comes from the textbook and MyLabsPlus. Online courses require students to rely on their reading and writing skills rather than their speaking and listening skills.

Students can contact the Tutor Center up to three (3) times per night by any combination of phone, fax, email or interactive web. Students will receive up to 15 minutes of tutor attention per contact. Visit for more information.

A few notes about MyLabsPlus:

  • The first time that you attempt to use MyLabsPlus, you will likely need to go through a series of diagnostics to ensure that you have the latest versions of java, flash, etc. on your machine. In the past, it has taken up to 90 minutes to verify and download the necessary files the first time that MyLabsPlus was used on a particular machine, but I was able to do it in under 10 minutes on my new machine this week. You must have the administrative authority to download and install programs to the computer you are working on.
  • Please refer all technical questions about why MyLabsPlus will not work on your machine directly to MyLabsPlus.
