ADOPTION POLICIES
1. Primary Caregiver
The primary caregiver of a rabbit must be an adult. The rabbit should be treated as part of the family (i.e., no group ownership, such as a classroom pet), and must be wanted by the entire household.
2. Indoor Housing
Rabbits adopted from House Rabbit Societymust liveindoors as part of the family. Their primary living space must be indoors, and they will spend every night indoors. During the day, rabbits can exercise outdoorsonly with supervision.
3. Spay and Neuter
For rabbits’ health and behavior, both sexes must be spayed/neutered. All rabbits adopted from HRS will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption, unless a medical condition prohibits it. If a rabbit is too youngto be altered before adoption, HRS will arrange spay/neuter andcover the costs at a clinic where we have an account.
4. Bonding
Rabbits love to have a companion that speaks their language, to snuggle, groom, and keep them company while you’re away at work or school. We recommend adopting a bunny companion for your rabbit. Bring your spayed/neutered rabbit to HRS for ‘speed dating’ to find the best match. We require two dates at HRS to ensure the right matchand build a strong foundation for the bonding to continue at home. If you are having difficulty with the bond at home, call us and come in for bonding help at HRS! Exchanging for another rabbit is a possibility, though it’s rarely necessary.
5. Returns
If you are considering returning a rabbit from HRS, please call us to see if we might be able to help you work through your current problem. If you need to return a rabbit adopted from HRS, we ask you to give us at least 2-4 weeks’ notice. Rabbits adopted from HRS must be returned to HRS if you are no longer going to keep them.
