Mrs. Harman and Ms. Jane's 3rd Grade Class
We have Yoga this Tuesday, September 20th. Please send your child to school in comfortable clothing that they can practice yoga in.
Math
This week we focused on graphing. We reviewed methods for collecting data sets and used the information to create picture graphs, bar graphs and line plots. Although we are building on second grade skills, in third grade, we explore more complicated questions and graph analysis where students are required to perform multi-step operations. An example of this type of question may be- How many more students prefer chocolate or vanilla ice cream than strawberry or cookie dough ice cream? This type of question requires the student to retrieve the quantities for each category from the graph, add the two categories respectively and subtract the two totals to find the answer. Pretty complicated in third grade!
Reading
We began reading Stone Fox together as a read-aloud. Using this text, we discussed the difference between what a good reader sounds like when reading aloud and what a not-so-good reader sounds like. We also created reading goals for ourselves such as reading more fluently, with more expression or building our stamina. The more aware of these skills we become, the better readers we will be!
Writing
As we continue to work on writing personal narratives this week, we revisited our Story Mountain graphic organizer. The most exciting part of the story is at the top of the mountain, then we plan for the events that lead up the mountain and those that run down the mountain to bring our stories to a close.
Thematics
Our Egg Rover Drop was a huge success. Each student shared their designs and rationale for providing a safe landing. Most rovers had successful landings, so no omelets for snack that day! We also studied heat and energy by conducting experiments to test how energy and heat is transferred from one object to another.
Health and Wellness
Screen time provides for a quiet distraction for your child, but is it really good for his/her well-being? Make sure your child isn’t “wired and tired” and check out this article:
