Question:Our Community Services Department is considering setting up a foundation to handle issues related to the City museum, arts, etc. Has anyone had experience establishing such a foundation for their organization?
Organization / Contact / ResponseCity of Rolling Hills Estates / Mike Whitehead – Administrative Services Director
() / We have the Pepper Tree Foundation that is a non-profit corporation with the State. Easy, City Attorney can do the paperwork and just set up an extra fund account. The Council are the board members.
City of Costa Mesa / Ann C. Shultz – Legislative and Public Affairs Manager () / The City of Costa Mesa has a non-profit foundation that has been in place for a couple of years. Please feel free to contact me and talk about our experience.
City of Murrieta / Teri Ferro – Deputy City Manager/Finance Director () / We just established a foundation. Attached is the staff report and resolution.
City of Cudahy / Mellie Deano – Finance Manager () / You can establish a non-profit organization by forming a new corporation. Refer this to your city attorney. A lot of cities have done this (Ex: City of Cerritos with their Performing Arts Center).
City of Selma / Roseann Galvan – Administrative Analyst () / We have developed a non-profit in the City of Selma. Contact me if you have questions.
Huntington Beach Art Center / Kate Hoffman – Director () / I am the director of the Huntington Beach Art Center, a community arts center within the Community Services Department. We have a non-profit foundation whose sole function is to raise money for the art center’s programs and operations. They were originally founded by a group of citizens who brought the idea of building an art center to city officials, who agreed to purchase a building dedicated for this purpose, with the citizens agreeing to form the non-profit and raise money for the capital project to renovate the building. They became a 5019c03 and operate in partnership with the city, who maintains ownership of the facility and program. The foundation does not govern the art center, but will act as advocates as needed.
San Carlos Parks and Recreation / Barry Weiss – Director () / Richard asked me to forward this information to you directly. Feel free for you to contact me directly.
