Question 1: How do you shut down, restart, and put Your iBook to sleep?

1. In the upper left hand corner of your desktop, you will see an apple symbol. Click on it. /
2. You can also put your computer to sleep by closing your iBook. It will use less energy than shutting down completely. When your computer is asleep, the light will blink. /

Question 2: How do you tell what program is open?

Any time you click on the items in the upper left of your screen, you will see menus. These drop-down menus will change based on what program you have open. Looking at the image, you will see that the open program is ____ (what is in bold)? /

Question 3: How do you “right-click” on a Mac?

1. Find the ctrl key on your keyboard. /
2. While holding it down, click anywhere. A menu will now appear. The menu will change depending upon the program. Can’t remember a shortcut or menu item? Try to ctrl-click. /

Question 4: How do you take items off the Dock?

The dock is a bar at the bottom of your screen that allows you access to a variety of programs. Programs that are running have a black arrow under them. /
Taking items off the dock:
You can take any items away from the dock by clicking on them and dragging them to the desktop. You will see them "poof" away.
Task: Find your iCal icon and drag it off the dock. /

Question 5: How do you add items to the Dock?

Adding applications to the dock:
You can create quick shortcuts to any programs in your Applications folder by dragging the ICON for the program onto your dock. (Be careful not to drag the program itself to your Desktop!)
Step 1: Double-click on the Macintosh HD. /
Step 2: Click on the Applications icon. /
Step 3: Click on the icon with three columns. This will alphabetize your Applications. /
Task: Click on the other views and see what happens! Try this shortcut: Command + 1, Command + 2, and Command + 3.
Step 4: Scroll down to iCal. Drag the icon back onto the dock. Notice that the icons will move, indicating where iCal will be placed. /
Step 5: Notice that you could not add the icon to the right of the bar. You can, however, add folders, servers, and documents to the right of the bar. /

Question 6: How do you empty the trash?

Just like the recycle bin on a PC, your trash can holds deleted items. Keep your trash empty for efficient operation. /
Step 1: Ctrl-click on the trashcan. /
Step 2: Select Empty Trash from the menu that pops up. /

Question 7: Are there keyboard shortcuts on a Mac?

Take some time once a week to learn a different shortcut.

You can learn about them under every menu!
Step 1: Click on the word “File” in the upper left hand corner near the word Finder. /

Step 2. Notice the shortcut for a new folder.To make a new folder, hold down Shift, press (Command), and the N key.

Question 9: How do I view available wireless networks?

When at any HCPS school, you should be automatically connected to the wireless network.
If you visit a location that has available wireless internet access, click on the fan and you will see the available networks listed.
(like Panera for instance).
Task: Click on the fan and find the name of our school network. /

Question 10: What is the Macintosh HD and where is everything stored?

When you double-click on the Macintosh HD, you will see the contents of your hard drive. The Hard Drive of your computer contains ALL files. Do not rename this icon or your computer will malfunction.
1. Double-click on the Macintosh HD on your desktop.
You will see several folders residing in the Macintosh HD. Ignore those for now. /
2. Take a look at the icons on the side. This is what’s called the sidebar. You can remove or add items to this Sidebar just like you can on the dock. /
3. Click on the Desktop icon. Anything that you have on the desktop will appear. It is important to keep your desktop clean. Files should be stored in the Documents folder. /
4. Click on the teacher icon.
You are the user "teacher." In your folder, you will seea link to your Desktop, Downloads, Movies you create, Music you import or download, and Pictures that will also show up in iPhoto. The Library folder includes important settings and also includes all of your email. /
5. Click on the Applications icon.
The Applications folder contains all programs on the iBook. Not all of them are found on the dock. Remember, however, that you can add them to the dock by dragging their icon on top of the dock. Do not move or rename applications as they will no longer work! /
6. Click on the Documents icon on the Sidebar. View the contents of your content folder (science, social studies, etc.) /
7. Click on the Downloads icon.
This is where everything goes that you download from the internet. /
8. Click on the Favorites icon.
This is another place where you can place quick access links (alias). You will already have a few servershortcuts created for you. /

Question 11: How can I keep my computer organized?

A well-organized computer and classroom make for an easier job for teachers!

Can you find your documents in the mess?
Keeping your documents organized and your desktop clean will make finding documents and backing up easier, plus seeing a clean slate every day may reduce stress!
Below are some tips that will help.
1. Create folders for things that you just need quick access to on the desktop. For instance, creating a folder on your desktop for unsorted documents will keep it clean. /
2. Use shortcuts! For instance Apple + Delete will send something straight to the trash. Shift + Apple + N will create a new folder.
3. Know how to use different folder views to help you organize. /
4. Create folders grouped by topic in your documents folder. /

Question 12: I need to create my classroom letter. How do I do it?

In this topic, you will learn several things that will also help you become more comfortable with using OS X.
  • How to open an application.
  • How to print quickly and double-sided.
  • How to quit applications.

1. Click on the Microsoft Word icon on your dock. /
2. Click on Open from the ProjectGallery. The project gallery can be used to create any Microsoft Office document. /
3. Begin typing. Enter down until you have text on both page 1 and page 2 of your document.
4. Go to File > Print. Notice the shortcut, Command + P. /
5. Make sure your school’s administrative printer is selected (ask your ITRT). /
6. Change Copies and Pages to Layout. /
7. Select Long-edged binding. Printing double-sided is only available on this type of printer. You can also staple and hole-punch! No more long copy lines! /
8. To actually print to this printer, you must be connected to Ethernet. If you are, you may hit Print and test out your printer. /

That’s it for your basic OS X training. More training will follow. While you may not feel comfortable with everything yet, the only way you will improve is with independent practice. Experiment freely! Your ITRT or TST can always assist as needed if you think you messed something up!
