Quality Payment Scheme support – document 8

Summary care record

On the day of the review, i.e. 24th November, the pharmacy must have increased its access to the Summary Care Record (SCR) during period 2 compared to period 1. Period 1 was Monday 3rd October to Sunday 30th April. Period 2 is Monday 1st May to Sunday 26th November. The increase can be as little as one additional view of the SCR.

This criterion has been included to encourage use of the SCR to support clinical decision making. This could be when advising on use of medication, to make emergency supplies, during medication reviews, etc.

How to check your SCR usage

NHS Digital has developed a SCR usage calculator which can be accessed at

Click the calculator tab, then enter the pharmacy ODS code (F code) into the blue box and press ‘Enter’ to access the current SCR usage. The calculator is updated each week on a Thursday, so if you check your usage on a Tuesday, it will not include any access from Friday to Monday within the figure shown.

How to apply for SCR access

All registered pharmacy staff who will be accessing the SCR will need to complete the appropriate CPPE training, which can be accessed at

You will need to enable sharing of your learning, to allow NHS Digital to access your CPPE record, so they can confirm you have successfully completed the required learning.

Having successfully completed the learning, apply to have the SCR role added to your NHS smartcard. The form to apply for this role is available at

Appoint pharmacy SCR governance person(s), previous referred to as the privacy officer. It is recommended there are a minimum of two per pharmacy. These staff do not have to be registered with the GPhC. The governance person should undertake the required training, which can be accessed at

The SCR governance person then needs the role added to their smartcard.

The pharmacy will need a standard operating procedure for SCR use and governance person monitoring tasks. A template is available at

Other SOPs should be updated as appropriate, to reference use of the SCR.

The pharmacy must complete the acceptable use agreement which can be accessed at

The pharmacy can then begin to access the SCR for patient care and track use of the SCR on the NHS Digital SRC usage calculator.
