Qualifications/Expectations for Deacons
Book of Order on Deacons: “Office is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, sound judgment.”
1. Personal expressed and growing faith in Jesus Christ.
2. The practice of speaking only what builds up the body (Eph 4) and makes for peace both in public and privately as you take vows to promote the peace, purity, and unity of the church.
3. Minister to those in need both in and beyond the community of faith.
4. Assume other responsibilities as delegated by Session, such as worship leadership and service of communion.
5. Enthusiastically supports the vision and mission of the church.
These qualifications lead to the following expectations:
1. Regular attendance in worship and other important events in the life of the church, i.e. annual and congregational meetings, all-church events.
2. Be active in personal discipleship through regular participation in adult education and/or a small group study.
3. Regular attendance at Deacon meetings.
4. Regular contact with ministries of the church.
5. Regular financial stewardship though an annual pledge and support of other ministries and mission of the church
6. Offering time and talents for use in mission and ministry.
7. Enthusiastically supports the vision and mission of SCPC.
