QUALIFICATION TITLE:CILEx Level 4 Extended Diploma in Personal Injury Litigation

OVERVIEW

  • CILEx Level 4 Extended Diploma in Personal Injury Litigation 601/3415/Xisaimed at those working in a legal capacity, who wish to develop the specialist technical knowledgerequired for roles in personal injury and litigation. Those working towards this qualificationare likely to be already working either within a specialist law firm or within one of the new alternative business structures, where a broader base of specialist and technical personal injury law and litigation knowledge is required for the specific job role thanis covered in the CILEx Level 4 Diploma in Personal Injury Litigation 601/3414/8. This will be due to the nature of the employment context, structure of the organisation and the specific job role. The qualification comprises specialist personal injury litigation units and general legal knowledge and skills units, some of which are required to practise as a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer. The CILEx Level 4 Extended Diploma in Personal Injury Litigation 601/3415/X therefore contributes towards the first stage in qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer for those who wish to progress.
  • There are no formal entry requirements,however, a high standard of literacy and numeracy (eg. GCSE grades A*-C, A levels or a proven ability to work at this level) is recommended. The qualification is aimed at those aged 16+.
  • The qualification comprises 9 mandatory units coveringclientcare skills; legal research skills;law of tort; introductory considerations for personal injury lawyers; preparation for personal injury trials; damages, settlement and costs in personal injury cases;the law and practice relating to road traffic accidents;tripping, slipping and occupiers’ liability; and employers’ liability. This is a QCF qualificationwhich enablesthe accumulation of credit towards other related QCF qualifications.
  • The learner will develop the specialist knowledge required to advise clients on complex matters where it is imperative to give correct information relating to the law and the options available. Unit coverage includes damages based agreements, fee agreements, legal expenses insurance, how compensation may be recovered, bringing direct actions against insurers, Limitation of Actions on personal insurance claims.

WHAT COULD THIS QUALIFICATION LEAD TO?

  • CILEx Level 4 Extended Diploma in Personal Injury Litigation 601/3415/Xlearners may be working within a variety of contexts inparalegal job roles whilst working towards this qualification. Completion of the qualification could enable them to progress to senior job roles within personal injury litigation, such as Litigation Executive and Senior Claims Handler, offering specialist advice either within a law firm or within an alternative business structure and may lead to practising as a Chartered Legal Executive lawyer specialising in personal injury litigation. Chartered Legal Executive lawyers specialise in a particular area of the law and are able to undertake the same level of work as that of a solicitor.
  • CILEx Level 4 Extended Diploma in Personal Injury Litigation 601/3415/Xprovides progression to:

-Higher Apprenticeship in Legal Services. Learners who are relatively new to the workplace can undertake the Level 4 Diploma in Providing Legal Services and work towards the Higher Apprenticeship (Personal Injury Litigation pathway).

-CILEx Level 3 Diploma in Law and Practice 601/3417/3, which is the first stage in qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer and is for those wishing to develop a broader understanding of the law and legal practice. Breadth is necessary to become a qualified lawyer and so this enables a learner who has achieved the CILEx Level 4 Extended Diploma in Personal Injury Litigation to work towards Chartered Legal Executive status. Learners can then progress to the second stage in qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer.

-CILEx Level 6 Certificate in Law 601/3412/4, which is aimed at those who do not wish to go on to become full Chartered Legal Executive Lawyers but who want recognition for their skills in a specific professional area of law and practice.

-CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice 601/3408/2, which is the final academic stage towards becoming a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer.

-a degree in Law/Graduate Diploma in Law (for those who want to become a solicitor)

  • The CILEx route to Chartered Legal Executive status also offers exemptions for learners who wish to become solicitors.

Achievement of a single Level 4 unit enables learners to become Affiliate members of CILEx.
