Q1 What part of the LCA programme does music come under?

Under Arts which is part of General Education. See syllabus for details

Q2 How many modules are there in the Arts section?

There are 8 Modules between 4 subjects, Visual Arts drama Music and Dance.

Q3 What are the module options?

Q4 Are the Modules elective?

Yes

Q5 How many modules must I cover?

2 Modules

Q6 Can I choose the modules from two separate subject areas?

Yes. For example you could choose module 1 Drama and Module 2 Music. Just note that in some subject areas it is necessary to have module 1 completed before you can do module 2. This is not the cases in Music however.

Q7 Can I do Module 2 in one specific subject area (i.e. drama) without having done Module 1?

You should be able to but check the subject first. It differs from subject to subject.

Q8 How many class periods are recommended per module?

Two class periods a week is recommended per Module. Ideally one should have 3 to 4 class periods a week if the two Modules are being covered in a year.

Q9 How many credits are allocated to each Module?

Two for each Module. Students are required to have 90% attendance and must have completed all 4 assignments to a satisfactory level in order to get their 2 credits

Q10 Can I award a student 1 credit for a module?

No. You can only award 0 or 2 credits and both of the above criteria must be met. Please note also that participation in musical activities is regarded as a necessary component of class attendance.

Q11 Is there a Task to complete?

There is a Task in General Education which must be completed in Year 1-Session 1(Sept to Dec) It can be anchored in Music, Recreation and Leisure, Social Education or Languages. So while all 4 subjects need to be involved in the Task it does not have to be anchored in Music every year.

Q12 Is there a final exam in Music?

No.

Q13 Does evidence of all Key Assignment work need to be kept?

Yes. Evidence of all Key Assignments need to be kept till that cohort of students have completed their Leaving Certificate Applied.

Q14 Can a Module of Music be taken over one year?

Yes. You can choose to do 1 Module or 2 Music Modules in the one Year

Q15 Do students need to have studied Music for Junior Certificate to do Leaving Certificate Applied Music?

No it’s a very different programme. Students can do the course with no previous training in music
