Well - all you little spring chickens - Nationals is but a few days away. I hope that you are bounding with energy and ready to streak across that pool. Also that you are ready to do some serious paartaying – at the end please! For all our newies, the party at the end is often what us oldies go to Nationals for!
We have 69 Wahooligans competing and have entered 49 relays at Nationals! A record for Wahoo! Add our team spirit and well, it can only be phenomenal!
It is an extreme honour to be part of a club of such fantastic people. People who just get on and ‘do it’.
We asked for help with hosting the inter regionals and the response was great. Thank you to the timekeepers and the Wahooligans that lend a hand wherever it was needed.
Also, the Wahooligans have, as usual, just piled in and helped with the organisation of Nationals:
We are all going to have fantastic dog tags thanks to Wanda’s hard work.
Goodie bags that will be handed to each competing swimmer will be brimming with goodies thanks to the efforts of Mike, Ross A, Pierre, Jen D, Jacqs, Trev G, Delrene, Deanne and Morne.
The dinner dance is going to be spectacular thanks to the efforts of Hendrik, Guy, Jean, Jacqs, Bridget, Jen D, Diana, Helen, Tammy, Sheri-Leigh (&Mom&Dad) and Wanda.
To say ‘thank you’ seems totally inadequate. You are STARS!
We will miss our other 44 members, who will not be able to join us at Nationals, but we’ll swim a length for you and we’ll have a drink for you! And then there’s always Durban next year!
Here we go!
El Presidente

Results
20 January 2007: 6 Hour Endurance, Kempton Park:
What makes me proud is the number of Wahooligans who participated. Wahoo had representation (Greg Higgins) in the team that came second, and the other Wahoo teams achieved 3rd, 4th, 6th and 9th place. A total of 13 teams competed from all the clubs. Well done to all.
27 January 2007: Old Eds/Florida Gala, Ellis Park:
This was well attended and I saw purple everywhere! Thank you to all who attended.
What I found remarkable is that in some events where we were 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th!
Well done to Glenn, Tyler and Debbie on their Gauteng records. Remember to ask for 3 timekeepers next time!
3 February 2007: Phoenix Gala, Sasolburg:
A few people grabbed the opportunity to see what the Nationals Pool is like. We were spoiled to expert officials. I enjoyed it so much; I am looking forward to Nationals!
20 & 24 Feb 2007: Tshwane Champs, Hillcrest Pool, Pretoria:
The Wahoo boys rule. It was an all male affair. On this sunny day we saw Tyler Morrison and Glenn Swart break the Gauteng Records in the 50 Free. (this time with 3 timekeepers) We celebrated with a tequila, beer and cappuccino and really enjoyed the afternoon session!
3 March 2007: Inter Regionals (Leg 2), Delville Pool, Germiston:
Again the Wahooligans proved to be up for the task. You helped, you swam and you won!
In this leg of the competition Wahoo managed to come first in the club standings. Regrettably, with the 2 meets combined, we came second (just!). Well done to Coelacanths who won the Club trophy.
However, Gauteng Masters Swimming managed to walk away with the regional trophy with 1150 points. Wahoo made up over 800 of those points: well done!
Congrats to Debbie (El Presidente) on her Gauteng Records (100 Free and 50 Back)and Bob Hatherly on his SA Qualifying times (50 and 100 Breast)
Again, a BIG thank you to all the timekeepers, and people that jumped in to help everywhere. Thank You!
Upcoming Galas
14 to 17 March 2007: SA Masters National Championship, Sasolburg:
As Debbie has mentioned in her “buzz”, we have a total of 70 Wahooligans participating. The heat sheets are on the SAMS website (see address elsewhere). Those staying home can follow the results on the web! The results will be posted on the website as they are completed!
Some interesting info: The most popular event entered by the Wahooligans is the 50 Free (47 entered), followed by the 50 back (36 entered) and then 100 Free (34 entered). The least popular eventis the 200 Fly (4 brave Wahooligans), followed by the 100 Fly (8 entered), and the 400 IM (9 entered)
I am convinced that we can improve on our 4th place from the previous Nationals. Maybe a 3rd? or even a 2nd?
All the best to those going!
For those sad to be left behind, mark this date: SA Champs 2008 in Durban – 12 to 15 March 2008.

News from our Members
Paul on Midmar
Paul swam the 8 miler at Midmar this year. Wahoo Masters supported him in this charity event.
Here is his feedback:
Thank you for your support for the 8Mile Club. It is really appreciated.
The first day of swimming was in perfect conditions. The dam was flat and it was a hot day.
Day two was the opposite and as the day progressed the conditions became worse and worse.
The main men's event, the last event was cancelled for the first time that I can remember. There were definitely some relieved swimmers when that decision was made.
The total pledges for all the 8Mile swimmers is at about R400 000 which will be distributed to the various charities. Personally I managed to raise R7750 which will go towards the Village Safe Haven. Somebody from the Village Safe Haven will be contacting you shortly to confirm your pledge and payment thereof.
Masters Swimmers at the Olympics?
I received an interesting email from Morne Williams. He said:
I made an interesting observation on our standard of swimming. If we took our results for the men’s 50m freestyle regional events, we swim faster times then the 1st heat at the Olympic Games. Not too bad hey!
And to prove the point, he compared the Masters Ladies ( 40 to 44 age group) to some heats at the Olympic Games:
South Africa: Women 40 -44 50m Freestyle (2006 Nationals)
