- To demonstrate an understanding of figurative language
Writing Task:
Imagine you have been transported back in time to the early 1600’s in Plymouth, Massachusetts. You are now in a society where religion is at the center of all aspects of life, even in your writing. In keeping with the Puritan tradition, you will put your writing skills to the test by creating your very own love poem that expresses your devotion to a particular love or crush in your life (it doesn’t have to be aimed at a real person, just use your imagination).
Using Anne Bradstreet’s poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” as a model, compose an original poem that includes the following: rhyming couplets, inversion, a metaphor (or simile), spiritual devotion, an allusion, simple words, direct statements, and references to every day ordinary objects.
Pretend you are a Puritan and express your thoughts and feelings on love (or lack thereof) like Bradstreet does in her poetry. Remember, there are many different types of love—from a special person or celebrity, a favorite sports team to a hobby. Be creative and try to write about what inspires love in your own life while tapping into your Puritan knowledge base.
