Context of School
St Joseph’s is a smaller-than-average primary school. The majority of pupils are of White British heritage. The proportion of the pupils who speak English as an additional language is above the national average. 24% of of school community are Polish. A significant number of pupils join the school at times other than the normal start date. The proportion of pupils who are disabled or who have special educational needs is slightly above the national average. The proportion of pupils who are known to be eligible for the pupil premium (the additional government funding supporting those on free school meals and those looked after by the local authority) is slightly below the national average.
Objectives of Pupil Premium Spending
Our key objective in using the Pupil Premium is to close the gap between pupil groups. As a school we are striving to ensure that pupils make good progress and are successful in closing the gap in attainment between PP pupils and non PP.
In order to allocate the funding to give maximum impact we use internal and external data to analyse where the gaps are and use a combination of intervention strategies as appropriate.

Intervention Support- academic interventions and schemes used to raise achievement across subjects. Our PP children often struggle with basic concepts and require additional support, these interventions provide that. These schemes are part funded by 20% as this is the amount of PP children in our school. This is because some of these interventions also benefit non-PP children.
Whole School / Maths intervention / £5000 / Training TAs to implement intervention packages in Maths (Success in Arithmetic, First Class 1 and 2)
11/20 children currently taking part in the three interventions are Pupil Premium children (September 2015) / TAs trained to be able to accelerate progress of PP children in all year groups.
Success@Arithmetic- 5 PP children made an average gain of 11months on their chronological maths age
First Class@Number1- 4 PP children made an average gain of 1year and 6 months on their chronological maths age
First Class@Number2- 5 PP children made an average gain of 10 months on their chronological maths age
Whole school / Better Reading Partnership (BRP) / £200 / TAs trained to support reading through BRP.
Currently 6 children who receive the Pupil Premium are benefitting from this (September 2015) / Y6 and Y2 targeted children become more confident readers and progress is increased.
9 PP children this year have made an average gain of 8months on their chronological reading age
KS1 / Purchase of 10 licences for Lexia / £600 / To support reading through use of the Lexia programme.
Currently 16 children eligible for the PP are using Lexia (September 2015). / Delivered in school and for children to be able to access at home –improved progress of children with low reading ages.
The16 PP children using Lexia have made an average gain of 8months on their chronological reading age. They have also advanced by 6 skills levels which is inline with the rest of the cohort.
KS2 / Accelerated Reader / £1000 / To support reading development through the use of a highly motivating programme.
Currently 14 children eligible for the PP are using Accelerated Reader (September 2015). / Children more motivated to read, confidence increased and progress accelerated.Greater % of PP @ Age related expectations (A.R.E.).
The 14 PP children using Accelerated Reader have made an average gain of 9months on their chronological age
Rec and KS1 / Purchase of Read, Write, Inc and relevant training. / £2,000 / Increased support to enable smaller teaching groups for Read, Write, Inc.
18 children eligible for the PP are using RWInc (September 2015) / PP children benefit from more intensive teaching sessions.
PP children sustain good attainment in Phonics test.
All PP children have moved at least two groups this year. 90% of PP children will be at their correct grouping for their age by July 2016.
Reception/Nursery / Baseline assessment of gross and fine motor skills / £200 / Identification of children/groups who need a programme of support and the implementation of this.
7 children identified for PP are benefiting from this support (September 2015). / Gross and fine motor skills developed to close the gap.
Higher % of children achieving GLD.
Identified children all made ‘Good’ progress from starting points in areas of physical development.
Whole Staff / Purchase of Tracking System / £1000 / Staff able to use data to focus on the target for all children make at least good progress. / PP children (along with other groups) are tracked carefully to ensure good progress. Software used half termly to identify these children gaps in progress.
Summer term data trackingshows a closing gap between PP children and non-PP children. (Data not supplied due to small numbers of PP children)
Y2 - Y5 / Motor Skills Groups / £3000 / Specific targeted sessions to develop fine and gross motor skills including handwriting. / Gap in writing narrowed against their cohort.
Children have greater in pride in their work and a more motivated to write.
Children involved in these interventions are now working at the correct handwriting stage for their age.
Whole School / Mathletics / £500 / Web based maths programme used to consolidate skills. 20 PP children are benefiting from this. / PP become more confident in basic maths skills and higher % working at A.R.E.
11 children have achieved gold awards, 5 silver and 1 bronze. 3 children have achieved know certificates.
Supporting Trips- Our PP children often cannot afford to access trips and have limited access to experiences beyond the local area. By funding these experiences we are giving them things to draw upon.
Y6 / Enrichment Activity / £1500 / Residential visit to Kingswood, including adventurous activities, subsidised to ensure it is inclusive. / PP children able to participate in this activity and develop self-esteem, confidence in own abilities. Four PP children from Y6 participating in this years trip.
5 Year 6 children benefited from this significant experience both educationally and pastorally.

Improved pupil writing opportunities evident through whole school displays and pupil discussions and book scrutinies.
Staffing- In order to close the gap between our PP and non-PP children we using additional staffing to support our PP children.
Y1 and Y2 / Breakfast Reading Club
(2xTA for 8 hours a week) / £5000 / TAs encourage reading through daily 1:1 sessions during Breakfast Club.

14 PP Children have benefited because of this to date with an average 5+month gain in reading age.

Y6 / Maths intervention
0.5 Teacher Time / £15000 / Teacher working with small group to consolidate skills/knowledge.
6 children eligible for PP are benefiting from this support (September 2015- February 2016). / PP children – both HA and LA well supported to close the gap. Regular assessment indicating skills consolidated. Children resulted in improved outcomes during this period with an average of 3points being made.
Children made accelerated progress of 2points during this term.
Leadership Staff / Tracking of PP children / £1000 / Leadership Staff released to track PP children and ensure intervention is having impact. / Impact of intervention is evident for all groups. Leaders have good grasp of PP progress.
Emotional support- Some of our most vulnerable children need additional emotional support. These barriers affect the children’s learning as a result, therefore we offer a number of mechanisms to support them.
Y6 / Digismart English intervention –HT and TA time 1.5 hours a week / £1000 / LA Y6 children who are underachieving (including EAL) given specific support with language skills – written and spoken.
Currently 4 children eligible for the PP are accessing Digi-Smart (September 2015). / LA PP children increase self-esteem and belief in their ability. Awards celebration held and children presented presentation to group.
These children made an average gain of 1year2monhts over the course of the intervention, in their reading age.
Whole school / Rainbows bereavement support / £400 / 3 PP children benefitted from this bereavement counselling this year. This paid for staff time and resources. / Pupil and parent questionnaires show improvements in children’s confidence.
Whole School / Friendship group / £2000 / Training for a TA in leading a friendship group. Anticipated that 4 PP children will benefit from this per term. / Training for TA booked summer 2016
Intervention commenced with groups of children however no impact to date.
Attendance- Our PP attendance is 92% which is below their peers in school and nationally. Children who attend school achieve better, this is a well known fact.
Whole school / Office Manager time / £500 / Office Manager to operate first call system and chase up absent PP children / Results show improved attendance term on term this academic year although this remains an issue for the next year. Particularly with this group of children.

Enrichment –This is used to increase children’s wider experiences and skills.

Families / Family Learning engagement programme / £500 / Three family learning programmes- Engihs, Maths and fitness have operated this academic year. / 50% of each cohort has been PP children and their parents. Parents are better able to support children at home. Parent attitude surveys are extremely supportive.
