The right to copy, reproduce, publish or exhibit any document held by Durham County Record Office is granted only by specific request and requires the prior consent of the CountyArchivist.

In all cases acknowledgement must be made to Durham County Record Office - see overleaf.

Publication must not proceed until the consent of the CountyArchivist has been obtained. A written response will be sent to you.

A reproduction fee will usually apply.

The use of copies or extracts from documents held in Durham County Record Office is permitted on the following terms:

1Use in unpublished work (e.g. theses, essays, projects)

The appropriate acknowledgements and references (see below) should be given.

2Use in published work

The publication of any document held in the Record Office requires the written consent of the CountyArchivist. Permission to publish any transcript or précis of any document or to reproduce any document must be sought in writing from the CountyArchivist, who will obtain permission from the owner of the document. The appropriate acknowledgement and references (see below) should be given.

Acknowledgements

Records held in the Record Office and referred to in unpublished or published works should bear an acknowledgement as to their source and the correct document reference number. The acknowledgement should be in the following form:

Reproduced by permission of [the owner of the document] and DurhamCountyRecord Office

References

The reference should be quoted as in the following example on the first occasion of use:

DurhamCounty Record Office (subsequently 'DRO'), Londonderry Estate Archives, D/Lo/C 113

and thereafter:

DRO D/Lo/C 137

Copyright

Photocopies and other reproductions of records are supplied only for the purposes of facilitating study and research and must not be used to the prejudice of the owner or the copyright owner. Payment for reproductions does not convey any rights to the purchaser and it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that copyright regulations are followed. It should not be assumed that the Durham County Record Office holds the copyright of documents in its care.

We would appreciate a copy of any article or publication using records from the Record Office for use in the Record Office library.
