Course: Intro to Law and Justice

Dear Parent / Guardian:

Greetings and welcome to a stimulating year of Law and Justice. You may remember this course as Public Safety and are wondering why the name change. There’s no need to panic. We’ve made some minor adjustments to the program and it is bigger and better than ever. I am looking forward to taking this course to the next level by exposing your son or daughter to all of the intricacies of criminal justice and the related dynamics that help this machine (known to some as the system) run smoothly.

Take a few moments to read over the class syllabus for this course. Please pay particular attention to the student expectations and requirements. Your son or daughter will need to bring a pen (preferably blue ink), pencil, loose leaf notebook paper, a BLACK three-ring binder with tabs to class each day and a one time fee of $6 to go towards his/her uniform shirt. Students are required to wear a Law and Justice uniform one day per week. Attached is an explanation of the Law and Justice Uniform Policy and uniform requirements. Points will be deducted for students that come to class unprepared, so please make sure that your son/daughter understands the class policies.

In my classes students will be learning the foundations of our legal and justice system through the use of terminology and techniques. I will try to keep you abreast of field trips, off-site labs and guest speakers throughout the school year. The students will receive an agenda book that should be utilized everyday.

Should you have any questions about the coursework, please feel free to contact me via my website, phone or email. If you have any questions at this time, please sign and return the slip below stating that you and your child have read the course syllabus and understand it. Should you have any concerns throughout the year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to the school year and believe it will be a rewarding one.

Sincerely,

Ms. Anitra S. Jackson

Release of Liability Form

To:The Parents / Guardians of students of Foundations of Public Safety

From: Mrs. A. S. Jackson, Law and Justice Instructor

RE: Physical Recreation / Defensive Tactics / Physical Labs / Release of Liability

Your child is currently enrolled in Introduction to Law and Justice and as part of the Class Standards and objectives some labs are necessary so that students can experience simulated scenarios of Law Enforcement. Lab exercises will include takedown moves, hand-cuffing, defensive tactics using actual batons (asp and wooden), training weapons as used by correctional and police officers and many more hands on activities. Students are expected to only apply 30% force towards their partners as the lab is not a real life situation- - just a simulation.
