PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY MEETING

Members Present: Kim Novak, Mary Kay Harton, Tosheka Robinson, Nellie Andrade, Latezia Fletcher, Patrick Panetta, Eric Cullen-Marlowe, Dianne Douglas, Alisa Smith, Cathie Fox, Gary Frazier, Fred Lozier, Rich Wilson, Lance Harrop, Sheila Stokes, and Monica Hernandez.
General: Kim is working on getting students involved and coming to meetings. The attendance list includes space to have topics covered at other meetings. Anita Blanco(absent due to illness), suggested the history of PSAC be presented to current members.
PSAC BYLAWS REVIEW AND RATIFICATION: Patrick Panetta recommended item number six to increase quorum from three voting members to nine voting member or majority rules. Kim will notify Deb Sullivan of proposed changes to amend Bylaws of PSAC before changes will be implemented. – UPDATE Changes were made and Bylaws Passed
SCHEDULING A CAMPUS SAFETY WALK: A Campus Safety Walk has been scheduled for March 1st, all PSAC members are invited to join us at 5;30 PM in the UCENT lobby. The walk will conclude by 8 PM. . Sheila Stokes distributed updated DPC maps.
On February 21st there will be an official groundbreaking of the KAET school building on the North parking lot of 411 N. Central Ave.(UCENT). Construction staging will be determined at a meeting tonight. Future student housing will follow with construction starting in April or May 2007.
METROVALLEY UPDATE ON LIGHTRAIL AND OTHER IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTION RELATED INFORMATION: They dropped the “Valley”, now it’s just “Metro”. Monica Hernandez distributed light rail pamphlet with updates that are available to all schools and departments for distribution. They are currently promoting the “MetroMax” discount card to use for businesses that are in the direct path of the light rail project. The “MetroMax” discount card gives discounts to consumers to encourage people to use them while construction is ongoing. The majority of rail is installed and connected, sidewalks, curbs, and ramps are installed. Light rail stops, benches, and canopies are to follow. The testing system is on Washington Ave. from 26th Street to 44th Street. Testing downtown will be at a future date. Monica displayed a map of the updated rail and the finished line.
CAMPUS SAFETY EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP WITH SACC: The Student Action Coordination Committee supports students before a crisis. Kim Novak serves as the Chair for this team and provided examples of student needs they have addressed. This team is preparing a proactive safety ed presentation for the DPc. The PSAC will preview the program before it is taken campus-wide.
SAFETY OUTREACH- ESCORTS INFORMATION: Copper Square Ambassadors and Police Aides are campus safety escorts. Escorts requests have increased since our last meeting. Tosheka will be distributing more information cards with safety phone numbers on them. She will also be tabling at UCENT to provide the information and do classroom visits. The College of Nursing set time and dates for a representative to visit all NHCI classes on the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus during which Police Aids and Downtown Devil’s Advocates will give information about safety escorts. There is a problem with not having the ability to reach all classes, but they are working on it. Sheila suggested the information tabling and distribution include Mercado, NHI, and PURL. Safety information cards have been distributed across campus to include these areas.
ROUNDTABLE: Kathie Fox stated that there is a separate and different safety escort system set up for Mercado students, faculty, and staff. Alisa stated Ambassadors were being deployed during evening classes to be available and visible during peak times. Appropriate contact information will be added to Safety Cards.
Alisa also mentioned that there are five positions available to be a Copper Square Ambassador. Applicants must be 18 years or older. $10 per hour for fulltime positions, varied shifts.
Dianne shared concerns about construction and ADA access. Patrick reassured her people are taking care of it, and it was ongoing. Deb Taska is the person that works to make sure we are ADA compliant. Lance encourages everybody to be aware of ADA violations and forward concerns to: Lance Harrop and/or Monica Hernandez.
Erin Cullen-Marlowe stated the YMCA will be hosting health and fitness, safety, and self-defense classes for students, faculty, and staff. We will be notified as soon as schedules are made.
Latezia stated that the Devil’s Advocates are very passionate and excited about their jobs and have been adding in safety information to campus tours and campus orientations.
Carol Sumner shared that the police response is great in her area.
Sheila Stokes lead a conversation reminding people about office safety in a downtown environment; locking drawers, drawers, and desks to hide; purses, wallet, blackberry’s, electronics, etc. There have already been two documented cases of a blackberry and camera theft from UCENT.
Patrick reminded everybody of the office building complex development of Central Park East located at Central and Van Buren Avenues.
Kim stated that Denise Link will be invited to a future meeting of PSAC to provide an overview of services offered in the ASUHealthCenter.
Katie Pogue is presenting RAD classes, self-defense at RSCOM for students, faculty, and staff. The dates will be forwarded to Kim for her to distribute to others.
Student & Campus Community Development will be hosting “Coffee Talks” from January to June on different topics of interest to the ASU DPC community.
Sheila asked for traffic support at 1st and Polk Streets for cars going over white gore lines on Southbound, 1st Street. Fred Lozier and Gary Frazier stated they would encourage squad cars to “enforce” not going over gore lines at the corner.
Due to construction on North parking lot of 411 N. Central Ave., visitor parking has been relocated to the 2nd floor and roof of the parking garage on 1st and Polk Streets. Rates are $2.00 per hour with $8 max. Make arrangements with visitors ahead of time for parking sticker validations or cash for cashier in parking garage. Cashier is located on North wall on garage where the “gold” wall is.
Sheila Stokes reminded the team about President’s hours with students on February 6th from 3:30-4:30PM in room 22A.
Fire drills are scheduled for the entire campus soon.
All members were asked to lead the discussions in their areas about safety and security in work spaces for us and our colleagues.
