KEEPING IT LEGAL

INSURANCE

Public Liability = Legal liability at Law ie. Negligence or Tort (wrong doing)

  • This covers U3A members causing injury to another person, or damage to another’s property at a U3A activity, which includes “member to member” cover which means the “other person” may also be a U3A member
  • This excludes children/grandchildren going on U3A walks (though dogs on leads allowed) and non U3A members on trips or days out, as this then becomes a non-U3A activity
  • Does include a Carer on an activity or trip

Please note that if your activity has a non U3A (or lapsed) member – except for a first visit before joining, then the meeting becomes a non-U3A activity and not insured.

Home Contents

  • Minor damage in your home at a U3A meeting where there is no negligence e.g. spilt liquid on a carpet - £350 excess applies
  • Stolen U3A monies – a maximum of £1000 can be kept by a group – no excess.

Trustees

  • Cover of £500,000 for “a wrongful act”- any actual or alleged breach of duty, negligent act, error, or omission, defamation committed in good faith, breach of warranty of authority, misstatement or misleading statement, wrongful trading.

Note – if you are accused of allowing something to happen, you can be claimed against.

All Risks

  • U3A Assests – equipment must be kept in a locked cupboard when not in use. (£100 excess)

Tour Operators Liability

  • Always use an ABTA registered Travel Agent for holidays – do not become a Travel Agent
  • Local coach companies are not ABTA protected
  • You may be liable if you book travel and places to stay yourself and these are not as described

Please note this is NOT a Travel or Personal Accident policy, as Public Liability is more relevant to Day Trips.

Please note that all reasonable care must have been taken, including risk assessments on using venues, including people’s homes. This does not replace your own Home Contents and Public Liability cover and U3A insurers may ask for details of your own insurance.
