PUBLIC INVITED- SALMONBERRY TRAIL BROWNFIELDS ASSESSMENT PROJECT OPEN HOUSE

Tillamook County Community Health is hosting an Open House to provide the community the opportunity to learn about and participate in the Salmonberry Trail Brownfields Assessment Project. The Open House will be held Wednesday, September 28th from 5:30-7:30 pm at Twin Rocks Friends Camp in Rockaway Beach {18705 HWY 101North). The event will be held in the Dining Hall facility; ample parking is available.

In December 2014, Tillamook County was awarded a $400,000, 3-year grant to assess brownfields along 62 miles of the Port of Tillamook Bay railroad to support plans to develop the Salmonberry Trail. This grant funding is providing for the development of an inventory and assessment of brownfield sites along the proposed trail. Brownfields are properties that are not being used to their full potential because of actual or perceived environmental pollution, such as abandoned 'gas stations, or other industrial sites. Thirty {30) sites have been selected for Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs). A Phase I ESA involves the review of existing records to identify recognized environmental conditions in connection with a property. If further investigation is warranted, a Phase II ESA includes environmental samplingand analysis. With assistance of a Community Advisory Committee, the project is in the process of prioritizing six sites for Phase II assessments. These assessments will inform how underutilized properties along the trail corridor can be put back into productive use. From these assessments, two sites will be selected for cleanup planning to be included in the grant-funded project. The Project Management Team is actively seeking community input into this process and your voice matters.

The Open House will feature representatives who will be able to answer questions about the Salmonberry Trail, brownfields, and redevelopment, including: Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Oregon State Parks, the Forest Heritage Trust, Friends of the Banks-Vernonia Trail, Visit Tillamook Coast, Tillamook County's Small Business Development Center, the Year of Wellness, Parametrix Consulting, the Port of Tillamook Bay, and the Salmonberry Trail Intergovernmental Agency. Tillamook County is also pleased to welcome David Rabbino, a well-known land use attorney who will provide information and answer questions related to the liabilities, risks and opportunities associated with repurposing contaminated property.

The public is invited to attend the Open House on Wednesday, September 28th from 5:30-7:30 pm at Twin Rocks Friends Camp in Rockaway Beach. The event will include a variety of informative kiosks and a number of presentations that will repeat throughout the evening. Refreshments will be provided.
