CPHA Mentors on Request

For the Future of Public Health

Across the nation there is a need for a trained, culturally and ethnically diverse public health workforce. Nationally, one in three youth is overweight or obese, and one in four children lives in poverty,[1] raising the risk of unhealthy diets, safe environments, timely health care and a good education.

In 2007, Connecticut Public Health Association formed Mentors on Request to address both the workforce needs and critical youth development issues. The MOR, a service of CPHA, connects established public health organizations with high schools and colleges throughout the state to bring public health knowledge and skills through classroom mentors to educators and their students. Since 2007 the MOR’s has:

·  Trained public health professionals to be classroom mentors and public health ambassadors

·  Held workshops for teachers to infuse public health lessons into their curricula

·  Published online resources of educators: Activities and Tools for Teaching Public Health[2]

·  Published Making Internships Work: A Toolkit for Public Health Employers at http://www.cpha.info/?page=MOR

·  Provided classroom mentors for Connecticut’s first Public Health 101 high school course

·  Placed selected interns at public health organizations

·  Presented at national and statewide public health and educational conferences.

When youth experience public health concepts and careers as part of their educational experience, everyone wins. Students gain the 21st century skills of math, science, technology, problem-solving, innovation, collaboration, and global awareness that prepare them for success in work and life. Armed with this information they can help keep the public healthy by practicing healthy behaviors, caring for the environment and becoming effective advocates for public health.
