INFLUENZA

28 confirmed cases (January 1, 2018 to February 15, 2018)

  • In January the town was averaging ONE CASE PER DAY.
  • The cases for the month of January we more than double the number of cases for January 2017.
  • Flu Fact Sheets and handouts have been distributed to daycares, preschools, WPS, FKO, Health Dept. FB page and in the managers blog to inform the public on steps to take and resources available.
  • The Chelsea Public Health Nurse has vaccine remaining – will have a MINI FLU CLINIC at the Senior Center on February 22, 2018 at 1PM.
  • Vaccine Supply is low and unable to reorder with many Medical Suppliers do to increase in demand.
  • Vaccine is estimated to only be 10 – 30% effective this flu season due to strain being treated in communities vs. the strains in this year’s vaccine.
  • VACCINE IS STILL THE BEST COURSE OF PREVENTION and RECOMMENDED BY THE CDC

Board of Health

Monthly meetings to review TOBACCO REGULATIONS

  • “Vaping” seminar on Maynard on February 1st with company JUUL
  • Vaping seminar with CASA on March 8th at WHS Auditorium

-Tobacco Training HOSTED by the PUBLIC HEALTH department in January. The Senior Center, Housing Authority, Board of Health, Youth Prevention Coordinator, Peer Recovery Coaches, Social Worker and Acting Director attended.

-Offered for FREE through DPH to provide training, skills and resources when serving communities and populations affected by Tobacco Use.

North Suffolk Public Health Collaborative

  • Last Board meeting in early January. Reviewed collaborative goals and upcoming events.
  • NSPHRC – coordinated an event with the Chambers of Winthrop, Revere and Chelsea. The event was well attended and had the Key Note speaker – MaryLou Sudders.

  • Meeting in March to discuss Community Health Needs Assessments. Invited are local providers and community leadership to discuss how we can partner to best serve our communities and gain data and insight into the health issues facing our communities.

SAPC

  • Youth Prevention Coordinator, Ryan Barry has joined our region – beginning in November 2017. He is funded by a regional grant with Winthrop, Revere, Saugus and Chelsea.
  • He has engaged local stakeholders and the schools to use existing data and programs to increase access to resources in Winthrop.
  • Attended CADCA - February 5 – 8th in Washington DC
  • A group with the GRANT attended – including Deanna Faretra and LeighAnn Eruzione from Winthrop
  • The conference was focused on Substance Use and Primary Prevention
  • We met Senator Markey and spoke about the importance of the work on a local level and received positive feedback and support from his office.

CASA

  • Moving to a NEW SPACE in the EB Newton – 2nd floor
  • FUNDING ENDS in September 2018
  • Having a fundraising campaign to support programming

CLEAR

  • Working on a federal SAMSHA GRANT application with Sgt Gergerian to expand our program.
  • Submitted a DMH grant to expand out existing programming in December 2017

*DMH has not made awards and is still reviewing the proposals

  • The Winthrop existing CIT GRANT with DMH is eligible for renewal at the end of our existing contract through FY19
  • CONTINUE TO EXPLORE ADDITIONAL FUNDING SOURCES to support programming
  • Continue to transition the program to the town structure with the Peer Recovery Coaches
  • DROP IN has MOVED from CASA’s offices on Bartlett Rd to EB NEWTON – effective January 25, 2018 (*handout attached)
  • DPH Intern proposal has been submitted to continue the work of data collection that our intern started last year.
  • Social Worker continues to receive referrals through the PD
  • Approximately 80 referrals have been made since August 2017
  • Attends drop in bi-weekly
  • Has begun a social worker group for all of the CIT social workers within the area to meet monthly and build resources and relationships with other departments.
  • Has created mental health resources handouts for the PD, Peer Recovery Coaches, the community and drop-in for there to be a current list of available resources
  • Collaborates with ISD on community cases and provides support and resources to additional individuals in the community

Department Operations

  • FY19 Budget has been submitted to finance
  • Includes the MRC/PHEP Coordinator
  • Includes the NSPHRC Position supported by the town
  • Includes Contract Services to allow for continues support of existing work
  • Includes BOH financial support for office supplies, trainings & memberships
  • The new space at the EB Newton is working out very well. Everyone has a workspace.
  • We are currently operating with “Town Hall Hours” – closed Friday
