2.Emissionsreductionmeasures

PartA. Emissionsovertimeand baseyearrecalculation policy

Table1.Emissions since baseyear
Products / Year(BaseYear:
2012) / EmissionsIntensity[tCO2epert paper] / Comments
AllCNProducts / 2012 / 2.24 /
  • Highestproportionofbiomassfuelsince2009
  • Highproportionofsalesofloweremissionsintensitypapers
  • LowerproportionofsalestonnesfromShoalhavenmill(withhigheremissionsintensityproducts)

AllCNProducts / 2013 / 2.57 / Additionalemissions factor addedto chemicalsfootprint.
AllCNProducts / 2014 / 2.60
AllCNProducts / 2015 / 2.67 /
  • Lowerproportionofbiomass,acrosslowerproductionoutput
  • Slowstartupofnewrecycling/DiPplant
  • Increasedproportionofrecycledcontent and higherspecificfootprintpapers

AustralianPaperreportsemissionsonaproductbyproductbasis.APmakesnocomparisonoftotalemissionsovertime,otherthanthespecificemissionfactorwhichmightapplytoanindividualproduct–usedasanindicatoroftheefficiencywithwhichAPhas producedthe product.

Base yearemissions and anyhistoricdata are notrecalculated fororganicgrowth or decline.Organicgrowth/decline referstoincreasesordecreasesinproductionoutput, changesinproductmix, changesinenergyefficiencythroughcapitalupgrades, andclosuresandopeningsofoperatingunitsthatareownedor controlledby thecompany.Therationalefor thisisthatorganicgrowthordeclineresultsinachangeofemissionstotheatmosphereandthereforeneedstobecounted asan increase or decrease inthe company’s emissionsprofile over time.

Thus,AustralianPaper willapplyabaseyear recalculation,andrecalculationsto anysubsequentyear,on:

a)changesincalculationmethodologyorimprovementsintheaccuracyofemissionfactorsoractivitydatathatresultina significantimpactonthe baseyear emissions data

b)ordiscoveryofsignificant errors, oranumberofcumulativeerrors,thatarecollectivelysignificant.

The thresholdfor triggering a recalculationiswhena retrospectivechangeinthepoints abovewouldbeexpectedtoresultin a 5%change of a product’s specific emissionsintensity from that originallycalculated inthe baseline year.
