Mapping the Classroom

How well do you know your Geography classroom? You can probably describe it pretty well. This assignment challenges you to put that knowledge down on paper.

Your task is to create an actual, detailed, scale diagram of room 219. Why you ask? Well, the tools and skills you will use to complete this assignment are the same as cartographers use to create maps of cities, provinces and even countries.

You start by using the natural grid that already exits in the class: the rows of tile on the floor. Your teacher will provide you with graphing paper that you can use to organize your map. You need to establish a scale and then place the major features (doors, windows, desks, blackboards, etc) on your map.

To receive a level 3 on this assignment, you mustinclude all the things listed below. Those who include more detail may receive higher marks accordingly.

Use the following as a checklist to ensure your map is complete:

1. Do I have the 4 essential map elements?

  • Legend
  • Scale(direct statement, linear or representative fraction?)
  • Name and date
  • Compass

2. What type of map is it? ______

3. Is there a grid? ______Did I identify my seat? ______

4. Did I use colour to make my map more effective? ______
