Hanes Magnet School

PTSA General Membership Meeting

May 18, 2011

PTSA President Suzanne Cooke called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. and thanked the evening's host, Reynolds High School. She then led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A quorum was established.

The February General Membership meeting minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report – Danny Freeman summarized the budget at this point in the fiscal year. The budget total revenue is $49,612 with total expenditures of $42,131. This results in a net revenue of $7, 480. On a positive note, apparel sales came in at 148% of budget, Direct Donations at 93%., and the Book Fair at 118%. Thanks to all who worked on these projects.

Spring activities at Hanes included Staff Appreciation Week. The Hospitality Committee provided gift baskets and a luncheon for the staff. Hanes also participated in the Race for the Cure team, honoring four Hanes teachers and one teacher from Lowrance who are breast cancer survivors.

Unfortunately, Hanes did not receive the NC Legislative Media Center Technology Grant for which Ms. Curtis had applied due to the high number of applicants, which was triple the number of applicants in previous years, due to budget shortfalls. Because Hanes had received the grant a few years ago, we were not offered the grant again.

The County Commissioners Public Meeting regarding the County Budget will be on Monday, May 23, at 6:00, in the Forsyth County Government Complex on Chestnut Street. Parents are encouraged to make their views known about the county budget and the importance of public school education.

Andy Kraft explained next year's STEM activities. Having received numerous awards, some on the national level, the Rocket Club and Technology Students Association will be expanded next year, meeting at least an hour a week for 6 months of the year. These, and other, expanded STEM activities will require additional support from parents and the greater community (as coaches, advisors, sponsors, etc.) to be successful.

Thanks were extended to current Board members and school volunteers.

The Above and Beyond Award recognized 8th grade Language Arts teacher Shawn McDonough for his excellent teaching and commitment to Hanes, his creativity, and his good relationships with the students, parents, and the staff. He also helps coach basketball and volleyball. Congratulations to Mr. McDonough.

Retiring teachers Ms. Tutt and Ms. Edge were recognized by Asst. Principals Ayres and Brown. Thank you for your years of excellent committed service to Hanes.

The new Hanes PTSA officers for the 2011-2012 school year were presented and elected:

President Michelle Thetford

Co-Vice Presidents Shubha Mishra and Tricia Walls

Treasurer Melisa Westendorff

Secretary Laura Armstrong

The meeting concluded at 7:10.

Respectfully submitted,
