Presented by
Harvey Goldstein and George Leckie, University of Bristol
15 & 16 December 2016
Venue:
/ The Royal Statistical Society, 12 Errol Street, London, EC1Y 8LXNearest Tubes: Barbican, Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Old Street
Course Summary: / This course is designed to give participants anintroduction to the theory and application of multilevel models. The course will be based around theoretical sessions followed by “hands on” practical sessions illustrating the theoretical concepts. The hands on sessions will use the MLwiN software package.
Learning Outcomes:
/- An appreciation of the implications of ignoring hierarchical data structures in statistical modelling
- An understanding of multilevel models for various types of hierarchical structures
- Practice at estimating two-level continuous and binary response modelsin MLwiN, and at interpreting the results
- An understanding of the issues raised by missing data and of appropriate methods for dealing with missing data in multilevel models
Topics Covered:
/- Introduction to multilevel modelling
- Random intercepts models
- Random slopes models
- Multilevel residuals
- Modelling the variance
- Multilevel models for repeated measures data
- Multilevel modelsfor binary response data
- Introduction to MCMC (Markov chain Monte Carlo) estimation methods
- Methods for dealing with missing data in multilevel models
Target Audience:
/ Applied quantitative researchers with an interest in the analysis of hierarchically structured data.Knowledge Assumed:
/ The course will not assume a high level of statistical knowledge, but participants will be expected to have a basic understanding and experience of applying and interpreting multiple regression models for continuous responses and logistic regression models for binary responses. A set of on-line training materials to enable participants to refresh their knowledge of these topicsare available from the Centre for Multilevel Modelling (CMM) website in Bristol (Course
Format:
/ The workshop will be hands on and participants will be expected to provide their own laptop computers running the Windows XP/Vista/7 operating system. Prior to the workshop participants will be asked to download and install MLwiN from the CMM website. Details will be provided to those who register. This software is available free to UK academics and a 30 day fully functional trial version can be downloaded by other participants.Registration begins at 09.30 and the course runs from 10.00 until 17.30 (09.30 till 17.00 on the second day)
Delegate feedback:
/ “The course was organised and the topics were well-structured.”“Good balance of practical & theory, knowledgeable & helpful speakers.”
“Excellent course. Very challenging but pushed me to understand what I needed – I had a breakthrough. Thank you!”
