Activating Strategy / Begin a KWL Chart about Making a snowman. / Review the K part of KWL Chart about making a snowman. / Make a Postcard pretending that you are a snowman.
Teaching
Opening (10-15 min) / Preview “Shadow in the Snow”, and discuss beginning, middle and ending of a story. Take a Picture walk through “Snow Surprise” / Read aloud “Snow Surprise”, question and check for understanding / Read “Snow Surprise”, Focus on important facts that make this a fiction story.
Work-Time Activities (45-55 min) / Introduce new sight words for the week by calling out clues and having the students to glue the words on a piece of paper, then illustrate,
Science: Introduce closed reading “Polar Animals”. Talk about the weather where these animals live. Make a list of words students don’t know the meaning to and use context clues to figure the words out.
Social Studies: Introduce Lewis & Clark and Sacagawea to the class with a Brainpop about their lives. After the video discuss facts the students may remember about them. Chart these. The KWL chart may be used. Read the Close passage about them. Underline or highlight any vocabulary words that the students had difficulty with. / Review fiction and non-fiction stories, make a list of characteristics that makes “Snow Surprise “a fiction story.
Science: Close Reading - "Polar Animals" Take passage out and re-read it, review the vocabulary terms from previous day and complete vocabulary sheet, students circle words in the passage and go over it together. Discuss polar weather.
Social Studies: Review the KWL chart or an anchor chart of facts about Lewis & Clark and Sacagawea. Reread and discuss the Close passage about them. Use the graphic organizer to define and illustrate those new words. Add any new facts about them to the anchor chart. View a youtube video: Lewis & Clark Expedition.wmv by spykid347 (8:03 mins.). / Science: Close Reading - "Polar Animals" Read the passage again as a whole group, complete the comprehension page by going through each question together and answering them while highlighting the evidence from the text to support each answer, high group may be able to discuss and complete within their group, keep redirecting toward the text to prove their answers. Discuss weather in polar region.
Science: Review the chart and facts about Lewis & Clark and Sacagawea. Reread the Close passage about them. Begin to answer the comprehension questions. (Finish these on Thurs.) Students must PROVE their answers by finding the answer in the passage. Watch a youtube video: Lewis & Clark: Animated Expedition (8:49).

Science: In the Storytown Reader, read pages 240-245 about The Snowflake Man. Reread and discuss. Watch a youtube video about Snowflake Bentley.wmv by Sara Danno (5:32). Discuss facts about him.
Social Studies: Reread the Close passage about Lewis & Clark and Sacagawea. Finish answering the comprehension questions from the passage. Students must PROVE their answers by finding the answer in the passage. Add any new facts about them to the anchor chart. / Take reading and language arts tests
Science: Partner read in the Storytown Reader pages 240-245 about The Snowflake Man. Watch a youtube video: The Snowflake Man (a short film about Snowflake Bentley) (8:33). Compare the text using page 246 in the Storytown reader.
Social Studies: Review the anchor chart about Lewis & Clark. Students may complete a fact page and a Lewis and Clark Word Search from the unit.
Watch a video listed in the lesson plan earlier in the week, if not already seen.
