The Prytanean Society was founded at Berkeley in 1901 to recognize Cal women students who demonstrate faith, service and loyalty to the University of California, Berkeley (
The Prytanean Prize is awarded to a female UCB student with junior standing in recognition of her campus and community service, as well as academic excellence (GPA of 3.2 or better is required). The recipient will receive a $1,250cash prizeat the Prytanean Alumni Brunch on Saturday, April 14, 2018, 9 a.m. - noon at the Bancroft Hotel. (). Applicants:Save the date!

SELECTION PROCESS: The Selection Committee will evaluate the candidates on the following:

  1. Extent to which the student upholds Prytanean’s ideals of community service and leadership.
  2. Commitment and service to U.C. Berkeley and impact on the campus population, including other leaders/student groups.
  3. Service to the broader community and the impact the student has had on the communities served.

unofficial UCB transcript (for GPA verification purposes)
leadership and service essay
at least one letter of recommendation* (from faculty, staff, students, and/or community members - total of three maximum)
brief bio (3- 5 sentences) & statement (1 sentence on what you will do with your prize, if selected)

Résumé should reflect the following:

  • Academic Achievements: Please list any academic honors and awards. Describe any other academic contributions you have made beyond your college course work requirements like academic presentations, publications or internships.
  • Campus Service and Leadership Activities:Describe your service to the University and its allied organizations (for example student groups). Provide the name of the group/activity, the length of time you were involved and a brief description of what you accomplished.
  • Community Service Activities: Describe your contributions to community service outside the University (i.e. through educational, civic, religious, political, or social service organizations). Provide the name of the organization, the length of time you were involved and a brief description of what you accomplished. Paid internships or employment that involved community service may be included (please indicate if paid).

Leadership and Service Essay should answer the following (2 pages, double-spaced maximum):

1. Describe the impact of your leadership and service activities on you and the communities you serve.

2. Describe a contribution you have made and how it supports and empowers women in your organization(s)/community/world.

Letter(s) of recommendation should clearly state a description of the student’s activities including, but not limited to, the following areas: length of service or leadership, contributions to effecting positive change, and commitment to campus activities and women’s empowerment. Additionally, the letter should comment on leadership potential, exceptional strengths or unique situations.

Brief Bio and statement (to be used at the Student Award Presentation/Prytanean Annual Meeting & newsletter)
