Protocol of the first reference group meeting (27.01.2017)

Participants:

  • SigurdGaukstad (BMAT)
  • TorgeirAambø (BMAT)
  • Steffen Haug (MLREAL)
  • Sandra Steen (MLREAL)
  • EivindHjelle (StudAss)
  • Gabriele Brüll (Lecturer)

The following is a summary on the topics: Lectures, Book, Exercises:

- Lectures:

  • In general, very good lectures and good explanations.
  • Jokingly, liked that some proofs were skipped.
  • Speed is fine. Good pace.
  • Number of examples is good.
  • Great handwriting.
  • Very nice to have some repetition at the beginning of class.

- Book:

  • First part is more theoretical than previous book. But this is not a problem.
  • Students seem to like the book.

- Exercises:

  • Have not been very difficult yet.
  • The students seem to be able to finish the exercises within reasonable time.
  • Most don’t do the “additional problem”, but still like that it’s on the problem sheet.
  • What is done in the exercise class? It varies from week to week how much one is able to do at home before the class. The time limit 24 hours after the class ensures that students meet prepared for the exercise class.
  • Would it be an option to do easy exercises in a topic on one sheet and then a hard exercise on the next sheet, rather than having all exercises from the same topic on the same sheet? Students prefer to do one topic at a time, but are open to try the alternative. Will try it on some exercise sheets. Could be a problem that students do not have access to their exercise sheet from the last week to see how they solved the easy exercises from the same topic.
  • Good idea to have a quiz from chapters 2-5 on an exercise sheet.
  • Having mandatory exercises is good, because it forces students to work. Some beginning physics courses have attempted to make the exercises voluntary, but it seems that many students do little work for the class during the semester as a consequence.
  • Many students like to deliver the exercises as physical papers rather than scans online. Feedback tends to be better when the exercises are delivered in paper.
