‘Taster’ Courses
These single-session courses provide an introduction to a particular topic and are designed to be both accessible and enjoyable.
‘Taster’ courses are ideal for students who may be new to the College and/or who may be uncertain about committing themselves to a longer programme of study. Courses typically last 2.5 hours, and include a break for refreshments.
Bouncing back! Exploring Resilience in Mental Health
This single-session course explores the concept of resilience and why some people are more effective in withstanding the challenges and adversities of life than others. It proposes that all of us can become more resilient, by developing a greater degree of flexibility and more helpful ways of viewing and responding to events. The course suggests a range of ways to recognise our strengths, develop our confidence and build more meaningful lives.

This single-session course provides an introduction to anxiety; what it is, how it affects us, how to recognise when it becomes a problem. It explores how anxiety may be reinforced by our thinking and behaviour. A number of self-help strategies are considered to manage anxiety more effectively.

Understanding Low Mood

This single-session course explores ways in which a carer can support not only their loved one living with dementia, but also themselves.

Introduction to Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)
This single-session course provides an overview and introduction to the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) tool. WRAP is a tool designed to help us to take greater responsibility for own wellbeing and recovery, by identifying potential triggers and early warning signs of becoming unwell, and creating action plans to help us respond effectively. Students who undertake this introductory course may subsequently enrol on the 4-session Developing my own Wellness Recovery Action Plan course.

‘Core’ Courses
These courses are typically three to four sessions in length and allow students to explore topics in greater depth.
Words into Actions
This 3-session course is aimed at those who recognise that their life could be better and who are willing to make some positive changes. The course explores the process of change and the strategies and techniques that may help us to succeed. It emphasises the importance of making positive changes according to our values and the benefits of setting specific goals and creating action plans. Students will be expected to create their own personal goal and action plan on the course.

Dreaming of a Better Sleep
Having difficulty getting off to sleep at night? Waking up early in the morning? Spending all night tossing and turning? This 2-session course aims to help you improve your understanding of sleep and ways of dealing with sleep problems.

Making Myself Heard
Expressing our thoughts and feelings openly and honestly can be challenging. This 2-session course explores how we communicate with each other, and compares and contrasts assertive, passive and aggressive styles of communication. The implications of the different styles are considered, and a range of strategies and techniques are suggested to promote a more assertive approach.

Living beyond the Label
Experiencing mental ill health can be challenging enough without having the added burden of mental health discrimination, stigma and the exclusion from society which can follow. We will question the negative impact of discrimination and stigma in all areas of our lives and begin to focus on positive strategies to support and enable us to lead the life we want to.

Living Well with Voices
This 3-session course aims to look into hearing voices. Covering things such as ‘why do we hear voices?’ and trying to ‘normalise’ voice hearing it aims to promote wellbeing whilst living alongside a diagnosis of Psychosis/voice hearing. This is an ideal course for someone living with or supporting someone who hears voices.

Being in the Moment: Exploring Mindfulness
‘Sorry…. I’m all over the place!’ How many times have we said that? Busy, distracted minds can be the bane of our life. They can ruin our concentration, enjoyment and happiness. Learning the skills to practice Mindfulness can help us achieve a sense of being present, of being in the here and now.

Exploring Spirituality
Whether we are formal believers in a particular faith or not; it’s becoming more and more evident that spirituality plays a big part in mental health and recovery. This course will offer space for us to explore our own individual spirituality, through input, practice and discussion. We will examine what challenges, motivates and sustains us.

FAQs
What does it cost?
All our courses are free.
Do I need to be referred by my mental health team/professional?
No, we don’t accept referrals. If you are in receipt of mental health services, your named professional may tell you about the College and some of the courses available. However it is up to you to make contact and express an interest to enrol.
How do I enrol at the College?
When you contact the College a member of the team will arrange an appointment for enrolment at one of our half-termly enrolment sessions. You are more than welcome to bring a supporter along for this session. Please bring a form of ID with you (Bank Card, Driving License etc)
I don’t want to go back to College and I don’t have many qualifications. Does this matter?
Currently none of our courses require any formal entry requirements and whilst the Recovery College is running on the principles of Further Education please don’t let a negative past experience put you off. At the Recovery College you will be encouraged to discuss subjects which arise, share ideas and support other students and most importantly you will learn at your own pace.
Do I have to take any test or exams at the College?
No, we currently aren’t running any accredited courses at the College although as the College develops some accredited courses may become available.
How many other students will be on the course with me?
The student cohort will remain small, so you have the best chance of fully understanding through shared learning and discussion. The maximum number of students per course will be between 10-12.
Are there a maximum number of courses I can take?
Your enrolment at the College will last one academic year (Sep – Aug). The College runs on a three term academic year. During the first two terms we recommend you taking a mixture of ‘taster sessions’ and ‘core sessions. In your final term, to prepare you for leaving the College, we would recommend you take our ‘moving on’ courses. At enrolment we would make sure you are not overwhelming yourself by taking too many courses, therefore, we would advise a maximum of eight courses during the academic year.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
No, just an openness to learning and a willingness to get involved. Most things are provided but as your time goes on at the College you may require extra files to keep your work in. We do not provide food or drink at the College.
Is transport provided?
Transport is not provided as students at the College will be expected to make their own arrangements to and from venues.
Where will I learn and who will teach me?
We currently deliver courses across four localities - Lincoln, Gainsborough, Grantham and Stamford. To assure the standard of our courses, all courses are co-delivered by a qualified trainer, an expert health professional and an expert by experience.
Can I bring a supporter?
At enrolment you will have the opportunity to complete an Individual Learning Plan. This is a means through which you can highlight any barriers to learning. Your plan will enable trainers to adapt the delivery of the courses for your specific needs. If you find during the course you don’t understand something then please raise this with the trainer. We may be able to offer you, on an informal basis, a ‘study buddy’ who can give you some support in sessions. Bringing along a supporter is a good idea; however we would require your supporter to enrol as a student of the College.
What happens if I don’t attend part of or the whole course?
We recognise that on occasions you may be unable to attend a session or a course for a variety of reasons. If you are unable to attend, please let us know via phone, text or email at the earliest opportunity. You will find our contact details in your Welcome Pack. This will enable us to offer the place to another student, where appropriate. Full attendance on ‘core’ courses is important, as absence will affect your learning.
