Pros: McCoy is an accurate passer, has decent size and pretty good athletic ability. He is a threat to scramble and pick up yardage, and has the ability to extend plays with his feet. He seems to be a pretty good leader, and also seems to be a fairly intelligent player. He was very productive at Texas and has tons of starting experience even if it is in their spread offense. Has decent footwork when given time in the pocket as well as a pretty good delivery with no serious issues.

Cons: He operates almost exclusively out of the shotgun, has average arm strength and his intermediate and deep passes lack zip on them and will hang in the air too long, especially on outs or other timing passes thrown to the sideline. He rarely goes through more than one or two progressions on a given play, and when forced to do so under pressure he tends to make poor decisions and force throws into coverage. He does not seem to do well in the face of pressure, and needs to learn to throw the ball away more (though he has flashed the ability to do so). Will throw off his back foot in the face of pressure, meaning tons of air under the ball. He has gotten away with this on the college level, but NFL DB’s will eat him alive if he tries that.

Overall: McCoy strikes me as a very good college player but an average at best NFL player. He is not an elite talent in any sense of the word, he has simply taken advantage of all of his talent at the college level. However he does not have the arm strength to make some NFL throws that will limit an offense with him at the helm. When faced with pressure regularly he struggled mightily with decision making and forced a lot of throws into coverage. He has good accuracy, but he will have to learn to read defenses from under center, take snaps from under center and execute 3, 5 and 7 step drops from under center. All while he works with less than impressive tools from a physical standpoint. To me his ceiling is a spot-starter and his floor is not having the ability to make it on a NFL team. I think he will be a career backup most likely, and as a result could end up seeing some time as a spot-starter should an injury occur. I really do not see him overcoming his issues with arm strength and poor decision making in the face of pressure to become a NFL starter however.

Projection: 4th round: He may go higher because of his reputation, but I think it would be a mistake to take him before the 4th round range. He looks to me like a career back-up who could develop into a quality one as well as a potential spot starter. For that reason it would make little sense to spend a pick any higher than this on him. I personally wouldn’t pick him until the 5th, but it’s hard to imagine him sliding all the way through 4 rounds entirely.
