The problem: Best and Fairest
Best and Fairest is a company that specialises in organising tours and trips for sporting groups. One of the new trips the company offers is a week on the Gold Coast visiting the theme parks. Best and Fairest targets younger teams, but require that there is a minimum of one adult for every three under 18s.
You have been asked to help the company set up the paperwork for the new trip. You will need to:
• design a spreadsheet to calculate per person (adult and child) costs
• calculate the value of cheques to be drawn once final numbers are known
• design a database to store the details of those travelling
• create individualised letters to participants confirming the itinerary and final payment details
• create a logo for Best and Fairest
• design a brochure advertising the trips
• build a web page that provides more information than is available on the brochure, including links to the theme parks.
Some of the costs associated with each trip are:
• airfare: $678 (adult), $339 (child)
• park entry: $153 (adult), $99 (child)
• movie ticket: $15 (adult), $12 (student)
• group movie ticket—4 pack: $55 (adult), $42 (student)
• blade/bike hire per day: $18 (adult), $14 (child)
• accommodation and meal package (incl. breakfast and evening meals): $70/night (adults), 10% discount (student)
• company organisation fee: 10% per person
• 21-seat minibus per 24 hours: $140
• fuel: 400 km, 6L/100 km.
Not included in package are:
• lunch costs
• other spending—such as individual shopping, extra treats.

Milestones
In order to successfully complete a project it is important to make sure that each step is being completed along the way. Milestones are one way of keeping track of your progress.
Write the tasks you need to complete in the left column and as you complete each task write the date and have your teacher initial it.
Milestone / Date completed / Teacher’s initial /Producing the solution
What will be your criteria for testing whether your information system meets its purpose? How will you go about evaluating it? Who will be evaluating it?
Evaluation of solution
1 Follow your plans and have your information system evaluated. Include your results as an attachment. Summarise the results here:
2 How could your product be improved? What do you need to learn to be able to do a better job next time?
Final evaluation
1 Did you enjoy the way this project was presented to you? Did it pose a big enough challenge for you? Was the challenge too big?
2 What were some of the things you learnt about developing computer solutions during this project? What more do you think you needed to know in order to more successfully complete this project?
3 How could you use what you learnt during this project in other subjects?
One page report
Using a word processor, write a one page report by addressing the following. The report is to be printed on an A4 sheet of paper using 12 point font.
Explain the advantages of using a formal design process when undertaking the development of an information system such as this one.
Journal
Before the end of every lesson, you are to write down what you did for your project during that lesson and what you intend to do next lesson. This is called keeping a journal.
Use the grid below to record your journal.
