Seminar

The education seminar provides an opportunity to synthesize the various aspects of the program.

The Education Seminar is a welcome addition to the program which will enable students, if done in cohorts, to develop supportive relationships with faculty members

  • although I’m not sure how much support can be expected if we deliver these in groups of 40
  • I presume that the intent is that all tenure-track faculty will work with a group, this will potentially enable us to develop closer ties between undergraduate students and faculty
  • The Education Seminar along with the other relatively small seminars will also be particularly important for truly engaging our students in the Faculty.

I like the idea of the Education Seminar but don’t see how it can work unless students already know each other.

Seminar (T4 needs an exit project)

Ed. Seminar has synthesis and research inquiry-oriented focus – term-based inquiry questions

Field Experience

Opportunity for practicum in community is great.

Good to have an early field experience

Alternative forms for FX.

Adding more field experience opportunities is also an excellent move for the future.

Good to see experiences in school

Field experiences that will be implemented throughout the 4 separate semesters.

We want to note in particular the manner in which field experiences are integrated with the course-based components.

Themes and Concentrations

The coherent focus within each term and the progression across the 4 terms.

The focus of the 3rd term is a crucial component that is not sufficiently emphasized in the current program.

Developmental

The themes by term

Research and inquiry focus to the program

I like that students will be “guided” into non-education options

One of the features of the proposed program that I like is that an effort has been made to address the need for continuity through the themes/focus for each of the four terms. The seminar, which is offered in each of these four terms, has the potential to provide students with a more integrated and meaningful experience. The idea which was presented at the meeting that it may be possible for there to be thematic concentration within these seminars (for example, social justice) is one that excites me.

General Content

The proposed program addresses limitations in our current program – Aboriginal perspectives, diversity, history and sociology of education – knowledge that all students should meet in the program – because of the nature of our schools and of schooling and its relationship to society.

Diversity of K-12 student population has been addressed, as has the English language learning aspect of that diversity.

Really like:

  • Critical Literacies
  • Developing Technology
  • Aboriginal Focus

Diverse courses with a research focus allows instructors to teach on their topics of interest.

Language and literacy [like]

The clear attempt to bring more units to what we do in our departments/subject areas.

Program Structure

Collaboration

More comprehensive and co-ordinated collaboration

That assessment will be picked up across and within subjects.

Recognize collaboration as an item on Faculty Annual Report

Multi-disciplinary/inter departmental [like]

Bring faculty together (opportunities for dialogue and engagement)

Possibility for team teaching [like]

Faculty owns the courses (not departments)

Framework

Attempts to represent the framework and principles in visible ways. I do acknowledge all the work that has gone into this, and the difficult challenges given such a large and complex faculty.

The proposed program is true to the Principles document and Curriculum Framework both approved by Faculty Council.

The complexity of teaching in today’s schools seems to come through in many ways.

I like that you have made an effort to address the issues identified in previous committees

Proposal does mirror the Curriculum Framework

Program built around pedagogical principles (built for students)

Communication

The ability to have input

Easy to communicate to students

Cohort of Students

Sec. Ed students in major will meet each other much easier in program. Feel like a cohort. Begin to identify with Faculty.

Credit Modules

Credit modules

Alternate Delivery

Possibility of alternate delivery formats.

Sequencing and Cohesiveness

Tighter control over the sequence of the program is also an excellent change.

Developmental [like]

I like the cohesive nature of the program

I like the idea of integration of topics

We now have a cohort curriculum – finally, instead of a collection of courses
