Review of Library Resources
Proposed new course: Perfa 180: Laban and Bartenieff Movement Studies
This course was offered in Fall 2014 as an experimental course. The Department of Performing Arts would now like to make it a permanent course. The course which is a combination of lecture and lab will serve as an introduction to Movement/Dance Therapy as defined by movement pioneers Laban and Bartenieff.
Currently the SMC Library has the following number of resources available in our collections under the following useful Subject Headings:
SUBJECT HEADING / HOLDINGSLaban, Rudolf von, 1879-1958 / 6
Bartenieff, Irmgard / 2
Movement Therapy / 19
Dance Therapy / 28
Authentic Movement (Dance Therapy) / 1
We have both the required texts in our collections, circulating and Textbook reserves:
1.) Making connections : total body integration through Bartenieff fundamentals / Peggy Hackney. New York : Routledge, 2002.
615.85155 B281h (copy 1 in circulating stacks; copy 2 in Textbook collection.) We also have the 1998 edition as an Ebook in our Ebrary database.
2.) Laban for all / Jean Newlove and John Dalby. London : Nick Hern ; New York : Routledge, 2004.
792.028 N461L (copy 1 in circulating stacks; copy 2 in Textbook collection.)
If other materials are needed, students will have access to additional resources via Link+ and Interlibrary Borrowing.
Since there are no research requirements for this class, the existing collection should meet the needs of the students. However, I would still recommend that the following statement be included in the syllabus:
Reference/Information assistance is available at the Reference Desk, by phone (925) 631-4624, text message or IM. Check the Library’s “Ask Us” link for details: http://library.stmarys-ca.edu/ask-us/ Extended assistance by appointment is also available. Contact Josh Rose, the subject librarian for the Performing Arts Department at or (925) 631-8563.
Respectfully submitted,
