PROPOSED BUDGET FOR MODELING WORKSHOP

(This budget is based on 20 participants and 2 presenters for three weeks in 2010. Adapted from a budget in Michigan that was funded by the county K-12 school agency.)

ESSENTIAL BUDGET ITEMS

Presenter wages: $5000 X 2 = $10,000

Participant Materials* (includes copies). *Jane Jackson from Arizona State University offered to get quotes and group discounts for the purchase of materials and copying.

Estimated costs include shipping and tax.

Arnold Arons textbook, Teaching Introductory Physics: $80

Mechanics Modeling Instruction manual: $30

3-ring binder + 10 tab inserts + cover art: $8

Quad-ruled computation notebook (8.5” x 11”): $12

Total: $130 x 20 = $2600

TOTAL FOR BASIC WORKSHOP: $12,600

0PTIONAL BUDGET ITEMS (additional teacher material)

Additional Text: Preconceptions in Mechanics, by Camp & Clement. $35

Antenna tumble buggies (set of 6): $50 (includes the cost of batteries)

Whiteboards (set of 6): $20 (includes delivery to site)

Dry erase markers (set of 12): $15

Miscellaneous classroom/lab supplies (paper, scissors, nametags, ref. book): $260

Total: $120 x 22 = $2900

TOTAL FOR ENHANCED WORKSHOP: $15,500

In Michigan, each teacher paid $70 to attend, thus guaranteeing buy-in (brings in $1400 for administrative costs, food, lab supplies & technology, or classroom rental.)

Teachers paid for graduate credit at an inexpensive local college, on an optional basis.

The workshop was held in the classroom of a presenter, for ease of setting up labs. Usually schools are willing to provide the classroom for free, if other teachers from that school or district participate.

OTHER POTENTIAL ITEMS TO CONSIDER:

Reimbursement to teachers for travel and/or motel, or a stipend to cover these costs.

Most teachers will be local, but some will have a longer drive or live too far.

Tuition support. Ask a supportive university physics, chemistry, or science education professor to negotiate this with their dean.

Food: teachers take turns bringing, or budget for some working lunches.

Follow-up: four Saturday 4-hr workshops, or online course or hybrid/blended course. $1200 pay x 2 presenters = $2400

Stipends or lab supplies/technology for participants (supplies and needed technology are often better ‘carrots’ than stipends): $400 x 20 = $8,000 (and/or CEUs?)
