3. Title of the Bilateral Cooperation Project (in English) :
The Development of Smart Windows for Energy Saving in Buildings
Title of theBilateral Cooperation Project(in Thai) :
การพัฒนากระจกอัจฉริยะสำหรับประหยัดพลังงานในอาคาร
4. Sector of the Bilateral Cooperation Project:
Science Technology and Innovation
5. Background and Rational :
The Paris Agreement embarks on efforts to fight climate change, and the goal is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius. Around 20% of climate-changing emissions are generated by the building sector. The energy use in buildingswill be doubled by 2050 if there is no action undertaken. This mainly results from the population increase and economic growth, improved access to electricity, and higher use of electrical appliances and air conditioning (HVAC)for increasing living standards, especially in developing countries.Today, more than half of the world’s population currently lives in cities; by 2030, two-thirds of the population will be urban dwellers and by 2050 it is estimated that over 70% of the world’s population will live in cities. Urbanization will be inevitable in the 21st century.Saving energy consumption in buildings is a significant contribution for reducingclimate change.
Reducing perimeter zone heating, ventilation, and airconditioning (HVAC) and lighting energy use are key factors to save the energy use in buildings. Smart windows based on the electrochromic and thermochromic coatings are emerging technologies that tint reversibly from a clear to dark tintedstate either passively in response to environmental conditions (thermochromism) or actively in response to a command from aswitch or building automation system (electrochromism). Light switchable coatings on glass manage solar radiation and visible lightwhile enabling unobstructed views to the outdoors. With this technology, the energy used can be reduced by 10-20% and peak electricity demand is decreased by 20-30%. However, the demand of using smart windows is not much as the price is very high. Therefore, the development of smart windows with high efficiency and reasonable price is still needed.
6. Purposes of the Bilateral Cooperation Project:
6.1. To exchange the knowledge and technology for smart window between Thailand and PR. China.
6.2. To support the innovation technology between Thailand and China in order to increase the value-added of traditional glass to smart, sustainable, and innovative materials for energy saving purpose.
7. Proposed Activities :
7.1. Exchanging of researchersfrom two organizations on development of thermochromic/electrochromic smart glass.
7.2. Exchanging the knowledge of the coating technique on a glass substrate, and optimizing pre-heat treatment parameters, and characterization.
7.3. Discussion and conclusion the results
8. How would the proposed bilateral cooperation project be integrated into the work plan and mechanism of the requesting organization to ensure sustainability?
Both Department of Science Service and State Key Laboratory of Silicate Materials for Architectures Institution: Wuhan Universityof Technologyare currently working on the research on the development of smart windows. The collaboration will be mutual benefit for both parties in terms sharing experimental results, facilities, expertise and experiences. To ensure sustainability two parties will be signing the Memorandum of Understanding on the joint projects.
