Proposal Form for 2019 programme

The closing date for submission of proposals is26 February 2018.

Selection of the academic conferences will be carried out by the relevant British Academy committee in May2018.

The principal proposer/convenor of the conference must complete §§ 1–12 of the form, and email the whole form to the Events Department of the British Academy (). It is intended that this form, in Word, should be filled in electronically, and sent as an email attachment (send it as a Word file; do not convert it into a PDF file). Please type your answers where indicated by the colons. There are no predefined boxes to limit the length of your answers, but please keep your answers succinct (§ 5 requires a fuller answer). Please ensure that you complete all sections of the form, that you provide all the information we need, and that all information is accurate and that there are no spelling or typographical errors.Your application will be judged solely on the information completed in this form, together with the referee’s report.

You need to obtain a reference. Download theseparate reference form. Complete §§ 1–2of the reference form and email the form to your referee, together with a copy of your completed proposal form. Please ask your referee to email their reference direct to the British Academy by the closing date of26February 2018. An application cannot be considered unless the proposal and thereference have been submitted on or before the specified deadline.

Your referee should not be directly involved with any aspect of the conference, and should be drawn from outside the employing institution of the principal proposer/convenor. References from scholars based outside the UK are acceptable.

9. List of potential speakers

Draw up a list of potential speakers who would make a balanced programme, and please give a brief outline of the topics to be covered. You should consider the geographical, ethnic and gender balance of the speaker list when making your selection. Where appropriate, you should consider including speakers from other specialist expert communities.

Preference will be given to proposals with a list of speakers who have agreed to speak and to provide a written paper. Regardless of whether they have given you such final confirmation that they will speak, you must secure the permission of each individual speaker to be listed as a potential speaker in this proposal.

Please indicate those speakers who should be regarded as priority candidates for travel/accommodation support.

10. Publication in the Proceedings of the British Academy

While the criteria for a good conference and for a good publication are not identical, the British Academy attaches importance to formal dissemination to wider scholarly and other specialist expert readerships. There is a presumption that convenors will aspire to publish an edited volume of essays arising from the conference, and an expectation that, in due course, a proposal would be submitted for such a volume to be published in the Proceedings of the British Academy series (

Submitting the proposal

Once you have completed §§ 1–12 of the form, the whole form should be emailed to the Conferences Team of the British Academy ().

Complete §§ 1–2 of the reference form and email the form to your referee, together with a copy of this completed Proposal Form – allowing them time to be able to compose their reference by the closing date. Please ask your referee to email their reference direct to the British Academy. It is your responsibility to ensure that the reference issubmittedto the British Academy in time. An application cannot be considered unless the proposal and thereference have been submitted on or before the closing date.
