Scope and purpose of role
Develop and maintain the existing and new UKYP and BYC website, our main communications channel, alongside social media and other online communications systems (Facebook/twitter). Create content and support/train young people to use the functions, and be able to support production and dissemination of ebulletins/online magazine. Be a key member of the Communications team and play an active role in promoting positive images of young people and supporting them to get their voices heard.
The successful candidate will have a reasonably good degree, but as important will be the candidate's experience. This position will involve a lot of writing and willingness and ability to communicate easily with young people aged 14-25.
The role would suit an ambitious second jobber with 3-5 years' experience in a digital marketing and communications role (possibly as a web editor). Ability to write and familiarity with web publishing systems should be a must, as well as experience with social media tools and a good understanding of how to increase website traffic.

Background information
The British Youth Council (BYC) is a charity led and governed by young people to empower others to have a say and be heard. Through our membership organisations and youth council network as the national youth council of the UK, we are a unique coalition of young people aged 25 and under.
We give young people, wherever they’re from, opportunities and support to inform, influence and take part in decisions - locally, nationally and internationally. BYC ensures that young people are recognised for the positive contributions they make to society and that their voices are heard by the people who matter.
In March 2011 we were awarded the contract for the management of a programme of support for the UK Youth Parliament which included inheriting the end stages of the development and launch iof a new website – which gives greater functionality to young people. This role will focus on managing that site and helping young people to use it, along with the complementary tools, bulleting and news content to feed it.
Key responsibilities
Communications content
- Draft timely, relevant and engaging communications material to share news and information on UKYP and BYC activities in a planned way, across our networks, both online and offline.
- Act as custodian of social media presence. Monitor and develop this in order to extend our networks and improve website traffic.
- Assist with the development and production of communications and marketing materials and the planning and implementation of campaigns, on and off line.
Communications systems
- Maintain and develop the UKYP (and BYC) website as our core communications channel and information hub for young people and other stakeholders. Specifically introducing the new website and training others in how to use it.
- Monitor site performance and work to increase traffic to the site and build UKYP’s (and BYCs) profile online.
- Manage online communications tools including the mass email delivery system.
- Contribute to the induction of new staff and volunteers in the activities of the department and use of these systems as required.
- Assist with the development of our online database and knowledge management system so that it helps the organisation function more effectively.
Youth communications
- Showcase young people's achievements and support young people to tell their own stories via video and audio content, photography and written case studies.
- Work effectively with Communications and other colleagues in partner organisations to provide communications support on youth-focussed programmes.
- Provide support to volunteers in producing communications online via websites, blogs and social media including vod/podcasts.
Other
- Liaise with BYC’s/UKYPs suppliers and partner agencies as appropriate. Manage consultants as required.
- Oversee and maintain BYC’s/UKYPs specialist equipment relating to new media production
- Support the wider activities of the Communications & Development department, working with colleagues to shape new ideas and plans and find creative ways to achieve our goals
- Be an effective member of the Communications & Development department and wider BYC teams, sharing ideas, collaborating with staff and volunteers.
- Adhere to all BYC policies, regulations, and statutory requirements, as detailed in the BYC induction handbook and on BYC’s knowledge management system.
- Attend meetings and events as required.
- Perform any other duties related to the role purpose, as required by the line manager.
Person Specification: Web Community Manager
Criteria / Standard / Essential/ DesirableExperience
/- A minimum of three - five years work experience of implementing web-communications/marketing activities
- Experience of website development, editing and maintenance, in liaison with a digital agency
- Experience of maintaining and developing an organisation’s social media presence
- Experience of producing written communications for a mass audience and the ability to adapt writing style for a variety of audiences
- Experience of email communications/marketing via mass email delivery systems
- Experience of managing a range of suppliers and consultants
- Experience of working with young people
- Experience of producing youth-friendly content and understanding of what is interesting to a youth audience
- Experience of producing on and offline publications
Education, qualifications and training /
- Educated to Degree level
Knowledge and skills /
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Capable user of website CMS systems and familiarity with database systems
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Survey Monkey, Mail Chimp and Cloud based systems.
- Knowledge of administering online Customer Relationship Management (CMR) systems
- Ability to use photo/video equipment plus knowledge and understanding of relevant processes and projects
- Understanding of Search Engine Optimisation techniques and their application

The post is for 21 hours per week, (or three days) salary NJC scale point 24 -28(£24,157 – £27,007) inc. Inner London Weighting) depending on experience and current salary,Holiday entitlement of 25 days pro rata, plus bank holidays annually. The post is offered on a fixed term contract until 30th September 2011, and would be suitable for secondment. This post is dependent on the successful applicant having an enhanced CRB check.
