1.)  Welcome

Becci welcomed everyone to the committee. All committee members introduced themselves and gave details regarding their background and experience.

2.)  Awards

To date there has been no nominations for the Una Holden award. It was agreed that we needed to consider how we advertise this award.

Cath advised that there had been no nominations for the long – term and mid - career BPS awards this year. The nominations from last year were carried over to this year. The HIV Faculty have also created an award.

A discussion took place regarding the awards process. Different options were discussed to increase the likelihood of potential nominees being identified.

i.)  Geographical Group Convenors to be asked to nominate members from each of the FPOP Geographical Groups.

3.)  Overview of FPOP

Becci provided the overview that the focus of FPOP was on the membership and influencing services for older people. Becci advised that there was also a role for FPOP to influence policy makers. She said that consideration needed to be given to the marketing of applied psychology for older people. She reported that there was an internal and an external focus for where the FPOP committee place their energies and what outcomes are generated for the membership and services for older people.

Becci identified two main issues that we needed to embed into the work undertaken by FPOP;

i.)  Diversity agenda

Requirement of BPS for faculties to consider diversity issues.

ii.)  Involvement of Service Users & Carers

Becci reported that she was keen to look at identifying a set of outputs which would be encompassed within the following framework;

i.)  Generating Group

ii.)  CPD Opportunities/Outputs

iii.)  Generation of Written Documentation (policies and guidelines)

iv.)  Launch of Work

A discussion took place regarding developing the future focus of FPOP and considering what does an Older People Clinical Psychologist do that is different from other specialities and other multi – disciplinary professionals.

What are we generating?

-  Briefing Paper?

-  Liaison Work with other Agencies regarding what Clinical Psychology can offer that is different?

Defining what we do that is different;

-  Risk

-  Co – Morbidity

-  Chronicity

-  Sensory Issues

-  Long – Term Conditions

-  Good Practice Guidance

-  Presenting Problems (i.e. somatic complaints)

4.)  Involvement of Geographical Groups

Cath identified the need for increased involvement from the Geographical Groups. She suggested that this could include;

-  Identifying People for Awards

-  Identifying Resolutions for AGM

-  What will FPOP look like in 2030? – 3 to 5 year plans (may be on a rolling basis).

-  Sponsoring/Supporting/Undertaking Research

-  Why would people not be in FPOP?

-  Making FPOP Relevant to the Future Membership (Membership Drive)

Cerys suggested the need to consider the level of activity and engagement is different for different Geographical Groups.

Thursday 26th September 2013

5.)  BPS & DCP

Cath provided feedback to the committee regarding the BPS and DCP. The BPS is a charity representing Psychologists from different divisions. It is run by a board of trustees. Cath gave new committee members regarding the aspects of the BPS which are run from the Leicester BPS Offices.

The DCP Committee is chaired by Richard Pemberton.

Cath advised that she had taken over as the chair of the Membership Service Unit since February 2013.

The DCP is proposing that instead of having a UK chair they are going to put the balance of power with the nations and have four nation chairs. The English chair will have direct links with Westminster. There is already existing links between the DCP in Scotland and Wales and the government in those localities. The FPOP Chair sits on the DCP executive.

The new proposed structure of the DCP – UK Executive will include;

-  4 nation chairs

-  Treasurer

-  Secretary

-  Membership Service Unit Director

-  Professional Standards Unit Director

-  Leads – Clinical Health, Adult Lead, Child, Older Adult, Learning Disabilities

-  Ordinary Committee Member

-  Service User Representative

The work undertaken by the Professional Standards Unit include work regarding;

-  National Assessors

-  Publications

-  Governance

The work of the Members & Communication would include;

-  CPD & Training

-  Communications and Marketing

-  Conference and Awards

Cath advised that over recent years FPOP has worked at increasing the role and profile of the Faculty within the DCP agendas. The FPOP has links with the nation groups and the Prequalification Groups. There has links with the Professional Standards Unit, the Clinical Health Faculty and the Division of Neuropsychology. There has also been discussion with the Learning Disability Faculty regarding having an older people/learning disability representative.

The IAPT work stream focused on increasing access to psychological therapies for older people. This was chaired by Julia Boot. The focus of this group was;

-  Commissioning

-  Competencies

-  Long – Term Conditions

-  Working with Service Users and Carers

A number of CPD days were held and the work stream produced a number of different documents. The IAPT work stream was also key in supporting the development of the post of Older People IAPT lead for the government.

The Dementia IAPT chaired by Reinhard pulled together a reference group. This work stream liaised with a range of other organisations including DAA and MSNAP. This work stream also was involved with the launch of the Alternatives to Anti – Psychotic Document. Strong links have been established with the Alzheimer Society, YECCO, Age Concern, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Psychiatry.

6.)  Division of Neuropsychology

Gail provided feedback regarding the DON. The Division is chaired by Peter Rankine. The Division has mirrored itself with the DCP structure. On each meeting date the Policy Unit and the Membership Unit and the Executive Committee all meet. There has been a change in the chair of the Membership Unit with Phil Yeates now the chair of this group.

One of the topics discussed is whether or not there should be the development of a Faculty of Neurodegenerative Conditions. Gail is uncertain regarding whether or not any decision had been made regarding this. She had spoken to the Chair of the Paediatric Neuropsychology regarding their work and progress. To date a working group has not been established regarding the potential development or not of the Faculty of Neurodegenerative Conditions.

Gail advised that the DON conference is on the 15th November 2013. There is an older people stream at this conference.

Becci suggested that consideration needed to be given to the FPOP response to the DON proposal and the links that needed to be made between DON and FPOP.

7.)  Professional Standards Unit

Jean provided feedback regarding the Professional Standards Unit. There are four meetings of this committee every year. Jean was unable to attend the June 2013 meeting due to sick leave. This group is chaired by Catherine Dooley. There are two vacancies (a rep for Northern Ireland and CTCP). There is a significant focus on HCPC CPD profiles. The committee had to provide feedback regarding these profiles. Becci advised that all documents have to go through the PSU before publication and that consideration needed to be given to the required timeline for this. Becci advised that she was aware that the PSU also had links with other organisations regarding accessing funding bids.

8.)  Health Psychology

Jane advised that she had joined the Division of Health Psychology Committee this summer. She advised that Health Psychology is a Division and Clinical Health Psychology is a Faculty. Jane has not been able to attend any of the Clinical Health Psychology meetings as she was on sabbatical. Sarah queried if there was local groups of the Health Psychology. Wendy advised that there was Special Interest Groups for Clinical Health Psychology in Northern Ireland. The Division of Health Psychology feels that there is a significant gap in their involvement with the IAPT agenda.

Jane also provided feedback regarding the Clinical Trainers in Clinical Psychology which she sits on. This committee are holding a conference in the Lake Districts and Jane suggested that FPOP could potentially make links with this conference. She also attended the Group of Trainers Committee. She advised that there had been discussion regarding bursaries for trainees and that training courses may have to compete with each other for courses.

Cath suggested that it would be useful to consider if we needed to review the FPOP document on training requirements to take into account the impact of ageless services.

9.)  Newsletter

Becci advised that Louisa had stepped down as newsletter editor. The newsletter is produced four times a year and there is a themed edition, a conference edition and a group edition. The role of the newsletter editor is to liaise with the BPS regarding publication and to select the articles included in the newsletter. Becci advised that the newsletter is viewed by the membership as being a key output which is valued. Reinhard suggested that he may know someone who may be interested in this post. Sophie suggested that it would be invaluable for the new editor to have an identified person on the committee so that they could liaise with. Cath suggested that it might be worth considering someone who has a split academic post could be a good option as they would have connections with a wider network for possible contributors.

It was agreed that a notice regarding the vacant post should be disseminated to the membership via the Geographical Groups. (Cerys to organise). This notice is to also be included on the website. (Paul to organise).

Becci suggested that it would be helpful for Louisa to provide information regarding the outline for planned editions for 2014.

10.)  Website

Paul provided feedback regarding the FPOP website. Paul advised he had taken over the website a couple of months ago. Paul suggested that the entire format and contents of the FPOP website was ‘up for grabs’. Becci suggested that there are financial issues regarding the running costs for the website. Cath advised that the DCP is in the process of re - launching their website. Cath advised that we needed to ensure that the FPOP information on the DCP website is up – to – date.
