1.0 BACKGROUND

Kakonko District is a place located in the northern part of Kigoma region in the western part of Tanzania. It’s bordered to the north by Kagera region, to the east by Geita Region, to the south by Kibondo District and to the west by Burundi.

Administratively it is divided into three divisions namely Kakonko, Kasanda and Nyaronga. Moreover there are 13 Wards, namely; Kasanda, Mugunzu, Gwanumpu, Katanga, Kakonko, Kasuga, Rugenge, Kiziguzigu, Muhange, Nyabibuye, Nyamtukuza, Gwarama and Kanyonza, it further divided into 44 villages and 358 sub villages.

According to 2012 population census Kakonko District has 167,555 people, out of which 81,417 are males and 86, 138 are females. However the population of 2015 is assumed to be 181,568 at the annual average growth rate of 2.4%, each household is approximately to be 5 persons and life expectancy is at 52 years.

In June 2016, the Minister for Finance declared Kigoma one of the five poorest regions in Tanzania in the 2016 National Development Strategic Plan. Kakonko being a newly established district in Kigoma, its people suffer severe poverty in relation to other districts in the region and national wise, mentioned among the five poorest districts in 2016. Unlikely that there are a number of strategic plans the government has been trying to undertake to improve well being of its people yet the inhabitants are thriving hard to survive, thence, we have overlooked the situation in depth and decided to support our government by promoting education among students and introducing environment clubs in secondary schools.

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Education has long been taken as a key to success and others go far by saying its key to life. Western countries have made a lot of steps in developing their states through improving education. African countries which are taking steps to improving education are experiencing rapid development. In Tanzania, education has been unstable thus making it lose opportunities in arenas of global education market. We see regions with enough better schools producing many educated people. For instance, regions like Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Iringa, and Kagera to begin with, have always been leading examples in providing quality education, unlikely other regions like Kigoma which may seem as backward in development.

This project comes as a way to trigger sparks of motivations towards doing better in education among the people of Kakonko district and Kigoma as a whole. There are many children, who have strong ambitions, but they lack motivation to work hard on them, they don’t see the giants from their territories that made it coming back to share their successes.

2.0 PROMOTING EDUCATION

2.1 OBJECTIVES

1.  To visit secondary schools.

2.  To establish academic clubs.

2.2. STRATEGIES

1.  To hold conferences with students and their teachers

2.  To create ambassadors among students who shall serve the same purpose in primary schools

3.  To support academic clubs and conduct various innovative challenges among students.

4.  To enhance connections between best students with various financial institutions for scholarship benefits.

5.  To run a blog, which will update progresses, made after a period of time for learning purposes and future references.

3.0 PROMOTING ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION

3.1 OBJECTIVE

1.  To establish environmental clubs.

2.  To enhance growing trees at schools and homes by raising 5,000 seedlings at each school in 11 secondary schools.

3.0 METHODS

In order to achieve the goals above, the team will follow the ways mentioned below:

Discussions: This will apply mostly during conferences between students, teachers and the team, when the team visits schools. It will also be helpful during introduction of clubs among students.

Lectures: Students will benefit from the project coordinators and other facilitators through this way, in which speeches will be the main medium followed by writing on manila papers prepared for that purpose.

Observations: The team will observe various physical, social and economic constraints, which make students, fail to crawl to higher levels of education. This also serves especially when the team, students and other facilitators will be working on the best areas for planting trees to make.

Action: This method will be taken as an important step especially during establishing the plan of planting trees. Here, both the team and students (+villagers) will work together to plant trees.

4.0 IMPLEMENTATION OF PROJECT AND MANAGEMENT

4.1 Project Activities and Work Plan

4.1.1 Conferences with students and teachers

1.  Motivating students: The team will visit a total of 11 government secondary schools in 9 wards that are within Kakonko district boundaries. During the visit, the team will meet all students (at once or in groups) and teachers and give speeches to motivate, and energize them to work hard in order to achieve their inner motives.

Here, the team members will show by examples how they rose to the level of university and at the same time use stories of Kigoma-born successful people in public and private sectors so as to encourage this generation to make-up New Kakonko.

2.  Introducing Study-Interest Groups: The world is changing through its rapid growing science and technology, in fact Africa as a whole has a long way to go in this sector. It needs young people with adequate scientific knowledge and skills to improve in technology. Developed world has managed this through its fair system of education, which offers students with a lot of knowledge and skills to create/innovate new ideas and work on them.

During our visit to these schools, we will encourage young students to work hard in groups for them to gain potential scientific knowledge and skills. Science groups will be ‘highly’ encouraged. This way will help many students to like and choose science subjects and make them innovate/create new ideas and thus, increase their chances towards global markets of science and technology.

3.  Introducing Environment Conservation Clubs: Today, the climate change that the world encounters is due to improper conservation of environment. Young leaders of the future generation have to start acting and wage war against current environment mismanagement. They have to learn how to create conducive environment by learning and creating new ways of life, which do not endanger our natural surroundings.

Students will be encouraged to divide themselves into groups and set visions and missions they need to accomplish, the team shall offer backup to these groups by connecting them with various NGOs that are working hard to promote environment conservation.

4.1.2 Academic Challenges

There will be academic challenges, which shall involve students from all government secondary schools in Kakonko district. The challenges will be conducted following the guidelines provided below:

1.  All students from form one to form four will be eligible for the challenges.

2.  The challenges will involve essay writing on headings that will be provided later based on creativity, innovations and/or improvement of the already established systems.

3.  The headings will be provided ahead of proposal approval and actions initiations, and they will focus mostly on academics and discipline, others highlighting environment.

4.  Three best students will be invited to present their essays during the first district academic forum, which will be held at Kakonko.

5.  Three best students will be awarded certificates and will be given presents to aid in their studies.

4.1.3 Environment Conservation Scheme

Through this project we will provide all government secondary schools with trees seeds, which will be grown into seedlings before being planted at their schools and their homes. We intend to grow 5,000 trees at each school as our initial plan. Future projects can follow this example by increasing number of trees to be grown.

In other ways, we shall help students with proper ways to make their environments look smart and attractive by training them on how to care for gardens and how important gardens are in today’s world.

4.2 Project Beneficiaries

The Project will benefit mainly all Kakonko inhabitants, because it focuses on boosting students’ academic performance and ability to master their environment.

Other beneficiaries will be the government through its local administration in the targeted district and region. Funds and voluntary man-power that will be allocated for this project will help government save its funds for some other important projects. In other ways, this will encourage other investors to put their efforts.

5.0 EXPECTED RESULTS (Significance of the Project)

5.1 Social Importance

5.2  Economic Importance

Þ  On a successful education project, many will hold noble positions in both public and private sectors thus improving living standards of their families.

Þ  Forestation will attract investors in timber supply areas and paper companies to build trust in Kakonko and thus many job positions will be created for our brothers and sisters.

Þ  Flower gardens may instill hearts of many with attitude to run flower business, which may attract tourists and investors towards the region. This may create part time jobs for students too and upon graduation, they may take it as a full time employment because it’s easy and not time consuming.

5.3 Management of the Project

The team determined to carry on this project is a joint force of five students from various universities in Tanzania who are from Kakonko district. The team members are identified by their profiles provided in the table below:

6.0 PROJECT MONITORING AND EVALUATION

The Project will be run for a time of 1 year involving four phases. Team members in coordination with local administrators and by then elected club leaders (at schools) will monitor project progression especially in phases 3&4 (environment schemes).

PHASE 1: This will include time period between August 01, 2017 and September 01, 2017. It will be time for intensive action, providing education through conferences and setting action plans as per school.

PHASE 2: This will follow after phase 1, in which evaluation of phase 1 will be done, followed by action of environment conservation scheme. Trees seedlings will be nurtured in formerly prepared gardens by the environment clubs at each school. It will last for 3 months (ending in December, 2017)

PHASE 3: This phase will exclusively involve evaluation of phases 1&2 and also will involve plantations of trees at schools and also students will be given trees to plant at their homes. This phase will last for two months, ending in February 2018.

PHASE 4: This will be a phase for overall evaluation. Every activity will be assessed and results will be published on our blog for future references. This phase will last till August 2018 when the project will be re-initiated but with higher targets/aims.
