Promoting a Rotary Club Ethics Program

Ethics is part of the DNA of Rotary, and as such, impacts each of our activities and programs. Integrity is one of Rotary’s five core values. Integrity is included as the third principle in the updated Rotary Code of Ethics. It is predominant theme in what we think, say and do in living the 4-way test.

The Ethics Initiative pilot project was the first step promoting a focused ethics program within our zone and district. The next step is to develop effective programs and projects at the club level. Although the primary focus of the Ethics Initiative pilot project materials were Rotary youth programs, they can be used to advance and enhance the stature and effectiveness of ethics in our Rotary clubs as well. Those districts participating in the Ethics Initiative have use of the materials. The modules can be modified to fit in with current programming in our RYLA and Interact programs and be used as a basis to develop programs at the club level.

There is life beyond the original pilot project. There were 12 pilot districts that started the Ethics Initiative in cooperation with the Josephson Institute. More districts have been added since the initial pilot project. The Rotary Leadership Enterprise for Rotary Clubs and Districts non-profit (aka The Rotary Ethics Initiative, EI, or TREI) was originated to develop and provide resources that promote integrity and character in the personal and vocational lives of youth and adults through Rotary Clubs and Districts. This Board is continuing to develop materials, provide training and support, and expand the Ethics Initiative.

Each district and club may design their own “ethics program”. The Ethics Initiative Board is there to provide support and resources as needed to the districts and clubs.

To implement the ethics initiative in your club:

·  Include the Ethics Initiative in your clubs annual and strategic planning

Some ideas to consider in your strategic planning for Ethics:
