March 2018
Projected Enrollment
We have just received our projected enrollment for next year. It looks like we are still growing as our total is projected to be about 15 more students bringing us up to 434. The increase will mostly be felt at the Grade One level. The next piece will be our staff allocation where our number of teachers will be assigned to Hollywood. This should be happening during the week following the March break. Once that has happened we can begin to look at an organizational model for next year.
Student Drop Off
Please do not drop students off form the parking lot as we do not have any empty spaces beyond those for the teaching and daycare staff. It also creates additional safety risks with more cars pulling in and out of a crowded space. Also allow the students to come in with the teachers and say good bye before they enter the school please. Parents should only be entering the school by the front door and making the office their first stop. Please do not enter the building through the student doors.
Learning Takes Flight In Room 208
Room 208has begun a new inquiry on ‘Airplanes.’ The educator team quickly noticed that students were building airplanes using small Lego and small blocks. They were so impressed by the airplanes built over the next few days They knew it was indeed something the students were engaged in doing.
Theteaching team added to their investigation and placed recycled materials such as empty paper towel rolls, yogurt cups and empty boxes on a tablewith a provocation that read, “Can you build an airplane?” Students began creating terrific airplanes with lots of details.
The goal in any play-based inquiry is to make the curriculum accessible to our students in an engaging way. So, they began documenting student work using pictures and had students write about it. They have been learning poems on the subject and watching educational videos, on airplanes. Students have also been creating their own Anchor Chart of facts about airplanes and in mathematics, they have been measuring how tall, wide and long our airplanes are. They even made a big paper airplane out of construction paper and took turns flying it and measuring how far it travelled (e.g., the distance the airplane flew was 10 sticks long, etc.). In science, they have been learning the parts of an airplane and other very cool facts. They plan on converting our dramatic centre into an airport and this will give students an opportunity to create luggage, a passport and a runway for the airplane.
Ms. Mirzoyan and Ms. Georgeare very proud of all of our students and their hard work.
Focus On Music Advocacy
Motivation is the key to anything we do in life. The motivated individual always seems to have that extra energy necessary to stay on a task that others have given up along the way. Music class offers your child the chance to develop this habit, and your support in this endeavor is vital to his or her success.
It is easy for a student to get discouraged and want to avoid attempting new musical skills. With your guidance and encouraging words, the goals of our class will be achieved. You play an integral role in the nurturing of your young musician.
There are no shortcuts in the development of young students. Dedication and commitment are the foundation blocks to learning music. Please look for every opportunity to compliment your children as they explore their musical talents. They are less likely to become discouraged if you continue to reward them for their hard work and curiosity. Your encouragement is absolutely necessary.
The chance to perform things learned in music class for other supportive family members can be an exciting experience for a child. Everyone loves the attention of an appreciative audience. When it is initiated in a way that avoids embarrassment, performing gives a child an even greater desire to improve musical skills and remain motivated in music class.
This is a crucial time in your child’s personal, academic and musical growth. Encouragement is the key ingredient in keeping your child motivated, and ultimately, to help your child be a success.
Musically yours,
Ms. Campos
Mrs. Tyl's Class

Mrs. Tyl's grade 2's performedthreee fairytale plays:
Goldilocks & the Three Bullyfrogs, The Popsicle Boy and Little Late Riding Hood. The children were excited about "acting" and performed for 7 classes.
Through the plays they have learned all about teamwork, hard work and having fun portraying the characters. It has been a great conclusion to their narrative writing unit.

Hollywood PS Expansion
At our last school council meeting we shared the good news that funding has been approved to remove the portables and build a permanent addition onto Hollywood that would provide us with a new gym and additional classroom spaces. We do not have any confirmed details yet with regard to the timing or specifics, but we will keep you informed as new information is released.
Eco Club
A quick note from the GO GREEN ECO Desk. Spring is around the corner and that means our annual Daffodil Campaign is taking place. The Daffodil harvest from our front garden will take place in April (weather permitting). We will be selling bunches of flowers to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. A sign-up list will be posted near the GYM - please sign up early to get your flowers. Last year we raised over $500 and this year we are setting our sites for $600.
Also on the calendar in April is our annual ECO Assembly for Earth Day celebrations. Stay tuned for a date and time - it promises to be packed with great information and fun activities.
Green-fully Yours,
The GO GREEN ECO Club
High Water Levels Brings Increased Risks
(Toronto, March 8, 2018) Conservation Authorities are reminding residents of dangers that exist near streams, rivers, ponds and lakes around this time of year and urge people to keep family and pets away from the edge of all waterways.
Spring is quickly approaching, and with warmer temperatures, people look forward to getting outdoors. Warmer temperatures generally also bring rain, melting snow and shifting ice which can contribute to higher, faster flowing water in watercourses.
With warmer temperatures over the past few weeks, we have already experienced significant snow and ice melt in our watercourses throughout the Greater Toronto Area. However, the river and stream banks remain slippery and may be unstable and the extremely cold water temperatures can also lead to very hazardous conditions close to any body of water. Also, with the frozen ground conditions and intense rainfall that may accompany Spring conditions, the flows in TRCA watercourses will be faster and higher than usual.
Please keep family members and pets safely away from any water’s edge and help make this an enjoyable Spring. Parents as Partners Conference 2018
