PROJECT PLANNING MAP-Energy for District 14

GUIDING QUESTION: HOW CAN WE CONSERVE OUR RESOURCES AND PROVIDE ENERGY TO DECATUR AS DISTRICT 14 IN THE HUNGER GAMES?

TEKS:

  • 5.6 A: Explore the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound energy.
  • 5.6 B: Demonstrate that the flow of electricity in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and can produce light, heat, and sound.
  • 5.6 C: Demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels through one medium to another, and demonstrates that light can be reflected, such as the use of mirrors or other shiny surfaces, and refracted, such as the appearance of an object when observed through water.
  • 5.7 D: Identify alternative energy resources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and biofuels.

Overview:

In the Hunger Games, an American society has been redistricted after Civil War. Some districts are prosperous and have plenty of resources available. Other districts have little or no fossil fuels or food available. In a post-civil-war redistricting, Decatur has also lost all fossil fuel resources and must now plan provide energy for electricity, food production, and other everyday needs. As engineers, we need to provide the city with multiple options of alternative energy plans. Research how fossil fuels provide electricity currently, how electricity provides energy to our everyday lives, how light energy works and is related to alternative energy, and the types of alternative energies. Make a plan for providing energy, and be prepared to present at a town hall meeting.
