This course is designed to expand leadership capacity, promote personal growth and develop a sense of value towards leadership among youth. Students participating in this course will have an interest in building personal leadership skills and gaining knowledge, expertise and experience in a variety of leadership opportunities.

Course Goal:

To develop confident and competent students who understand, appreciate and apply leadership knowledge, skills and strategies throughout life. To support students in developing an awareness of leadership individually and with others on a local, provincial, and national level.

Modules/ Timeline:

Unit 1 – Understanding leadership: Principles of Leadership

1.1: Create definition and description of various characteristics and styles of leaders and leadership

1.2: Understand the role of power, influence, and motivation and apply in context.

1.3: Analyze historical leadership and factors which impact leadership

Unit 2 – Leadership Within: Leadership Competencies and Interpersonal Skills

2.1: Examine relationship with self

2.2: Analyze personal skills & their impact on leadership competencies

2.3: Investigate the benefits of organization and time management

2.4: Establish effective stress management skills

Unit 3 – Strategic Leadership: individual Planning

3.1: Establish goal setting as an integral part of leadership

3.2: Develop planning skills and abilities

3.3: Investigate the process of decision making as an individual

3.4: Analyze the concept of problem-solving as an individual

Unit 4 – Communication: Personal Communication Strategies

4.1: Study effective forms of communication

4.2: Study personal communication skills

4.3: Explore effective promotion and marketing practices

Unit 5 – Promoting Leadership: Individual Roles and Responsibilities

5.1: Lead and support the development/planning and implementation of various projects demonstrating acquired leadership skills

5.2: Assess individual leadership characteristics, styles, competencies, and intrapersonal skills

5.3: Actualize a personal growth plan.

Student Evaluation

1. Outcomes will be assessed on an individual basis using a rubric scale. Students will help create the rubrics to be used.

2. All summative assessments must be completed to attain the credit. (See pink sheet)

3. Deadlines will be clearly communicated to the students

4. Assignments are due on the due date.

5. Students will be given a grace period to complete and or improve an assessment. - If a student fails a summative assessment arrangements can be made for further instruction and a reassessment. Students must consult with the teacher to initiate this process.

6. Parents will be contacted if assignments are not being completed. Tell parents to feel free to contact me if they have any questions or concerns. My email is annmarie.david @lskysd.ca or they can leave a message with the office or on my phone.

7. Extra help is available!!!! Make arrangements with the teacher. All assignments are your responsibility.

8. Attendance: Ensure you are attending school and that you are responsible for catching up on missed work if you are absent. YOUR LEARNING IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!!!

Classroom Rules:

1. Be respectful by:

- Listening to each other and the teacher

- Being polite and positive

- Using proper manners at all times

- Respecting your property and the property of others

2. Be responsible by:

- Being on time for class

- Being prepared and having your materials ready

- Attending regularly

- Being ready to learn

3. Choose to learn by:

- Handing in assignments

- Putting forth your best effort and taking pride in your work

- Participating in classroom discussion, group work, and field trips

- Doing your homework

- Being an active listener

Cell Phone Policy:

Cells phones usage in the classroom is for educational purposes only. If cell phones are brought to the classroom they are to be placed in a designated container and only removed with permission of the supervising staff member.

Cell phones, iPods/Pads and MP3 Players are not to be brought into rooms in which tests or exams are to be written.
