As a Project Geologist with Mountain Environmental Services, Inc. Mr. Bauer’s current responsibilities include project coordination and review, over site of field activities, QA/QC during subsurface investigations, analytical data interpretation, report preparation, project invoicing, underground storage tank (UST) and groundwater regulatory compliance.

Professional Qualifications:

Mr. Bauer’s work experience spans 9 years in the environmental consulting business. His range of project experience includes leaking UST assessment in North Carolina and South Carolina, soil and groundwater assessment, groundwater modeling, remediation system design, testing, sampling, and installation, Phase I and II environmental site assessments (ESAs), and state regulatory compliance.

Project Experience:

Biltmore Exxon (NC Leaking UST Program) – Asheville, NC

Provided project and field management for multiple UST closure and removal, release assessment, and report preparation. Supervised and coordinated the excavation and disposal of over 9,000 tons of petroleum and waste oil impacted soils. Assessment activities, remedial actions, and site closure completed on a fast-track basis in order to facilitate the development of the site as a five-star resort hotel in Historic Biltmore Village.

Progress Energy of the Carolinas - Skyland, NC

Provided field management and oversight during Phase I and II ESA, geophysical survey, UST removal, asbestos abatmement, and demolition of on-site buildings. Assessment and remedial activities were required in order to create a security buffer adjacent to the Progress Energy coal-fired power plant in Skyland, NC.

Former Benfield Industries Site (USEPA Superfund Program) – Waynesville, NC

Field activities included groundwater monitoring and remedial system operation and maintenance for former chemical plant destroyed by fire. Site was entered into Superfund program due to VOC and SVOC contamination of both soil and groundwater. Reports submitted to USEPA included standard monthly remediation system O&M reporting, and annual groundwater monitoring reports.

Mark IV Industries (NC UST, Aquifer Protection Programs and NC Brownfields) – Waynesville, NC

Provided field oversight and managment for excavation and disposal of heavy naphthenic distillate contaminated soil to achieve incident closure of soil contamination. Achieved incident closure with no further action for two additional release incidents associated with the facility.

Abandoned Gasoline Station (NC Brownfields Program) - Swannanoa, NC

Provided field management and oversight of subcontractors for soil and groundwater assessment of abandoned gasoline station entered into the North Carolina Petroleum Brownfields program.
