Title: Let’s Move to College

Content Standards:

1. Use algebraic and geometric techniques to make financial and economic decisions, including those involving banking and investments, insurance, personal budgets, credit purchases, recreation, and deceptive and fraudulent pricing and advertising.

Overview: This lesson is designed to create a budget for items needed to move to college. This budget will be based on items needed for purchase after parents have identified items that they will allow them to take from home. This lesson plan contains a financial aid component.

Approximate Duration of Lesson: 4 hours

Essential Question: What are the responsibilities of parents in preparing their children to leave home?

Materials and Equipments: Project Handout, Rubric, Paper, Pen

Technology Resources Needed: Internet, Spreadsheet software, Printer

Background/Preparation

Teacher will ensure that: 1.) students will identify items needed to purchase, 2.) students must have basic skills in using spreadsheets including using simple formulas and creating charts, 3.) students must have basic Internet research skills.

Procedures/Activities

1.)  Students will identify living accommodations based on their college selections.

2.)  Log on to www.offtocollege.com and enter the section on moving

3.)  Print the Moving Day Checklist

4.)  Eliminate the items that do not apply to your gender.

5.)  Identify items from home your parents will allow you to move to college.

6.)  Create a spreadsheet per moving category of the remaining items.

7.)  Using internet sources, price check the items needed to purchase.

8.)  Develop a budget to purchase items over the next six months.

9.)  Reflect budget in a pie chart graph.

10.)  Analyze budget to develop a personal living expense budget for college life. In this budget, include percentage of financial support for college such as parental, part time work, work study, financial aid, etc.

11.)  On a separate page: Write a narrative of discussion between you and your parents identifying the items you make move with you and include information on the development of your budget.

12.)  On a separate page, using correct MLA format, reference all the websites you used in completing this project.

Extension: Students can create a PowerPoint presentation of budgeted items and purchases.

Assessment Strategies:

Teacher will use the Let’s Move to College Rubric in grading student projects.
