Learning to See Photographically

Light and Exposure

Exposure in digital photography is the foundation of creating images. It essentially deals with the amount of light reaching the sensor to create an image. Controlling this light will be one of the cornerstones to developing photographs. It depends on three main factors: shutter speed, aperture and ISO. These key concepts will be vital to understand for all projects this semester. This unit will prepare you for understanding the basics of exposure while opening up the creative options each variable provides.

You will receive an assessed grade for each of these three: Knowledge and Understanding, Transfer of Learning and Communication of Learning.

Knowledge and Understanding

Taking photographs

Through planning, brainstorming, and preparation, you will create images which demonstrate an understanding of exposure and the creative possibilities of shutter speed and aperture. You will create:

3 images which demonstrate a fast shutter speed.

3 images which demonstrate a slow shutter speed.

3 images which demonstrate the use of a large aperture (selective focus).

Consider other aspects of photography which were discussed in class such as: perspective, framing, the subject and composition and incorporate them into your final images.

1/2 Emerging / 3/4 Developing / 5/6 Proficient / 7 Exemplary
K/U / Student struggles to demonstrate an understanding of exposure in their images and has not considered other aspects of composition, framing and perspective in their final images. / Student shows progress in demonstrating an understanding of exposure in their images and has moderately considered other aspects of composition, framing and perspective in their final images. / Student has demonstrated an understanding of exposure in their images and has successfully considered other aspects of composition, framing and perspective in their final images. / Student has demonstrated an exceptional understanding of exposure in their images and has successfully implemented other aspects of composition, framing and perspective in their final images with creativity.

Transfer of Learning

Two tasks: Resources and Reflection

In your research you must find at least 5 useful resources (websites, tutorials, etc).

In a short paragraph for each link, explain in detail:

  1. Why each tool was appropriate to your project.
  2. How the resource helped you complete the project.

At the end of the project, write a reflective paragraph based on the questions assigned:

1.Which images were the most successful? Why?

2.Which images or concepts did you find most difficult and why?

3.What problems did you face and how did you overcome them?

1/2 Emerging / 3/4 Developing / 5/6 Proficient / 7 Exemplary
T of L / Student has not provided or has not explained the use of help-resources in completing the project and/or has not completed the assigned reflection. / Student has begun to identify and locate up to 5 help-resources but could further explain their usefulness in completing the project.
Student has written an adequate reflection of how the resources have helped them in their tasks. / Student has identified and located 5 help-resources and explained their usefulness in completing the project.
Student has completed a reflection and has explained how the resources helped them to complete their tasks. / Student has identified and located more than 5 help-resources and explained their usefulness both for the project and future projects.
Student has completed a reflection and has explained how the resources helped them to complete their tasks with specific and thorough explanations.

Communication of Learning

Presentation of Work

a) Post your project to your e-portfolio and and present it to your classmates. Explain how you achieved the final images and how they have successfully met the goals of the project.

b) Complete a peer evaluation of a classmate’s work that celebrates their successes and suggest any changes that could be made to make it better.

1/2 Emerging / 3/4 Developing / 5/6 Proficient / 7 Exemplary
C of L / Student does not present their work to a fellow classmate or explains the learning process they went through. Student does not complete a peer evaluation of a classmate evaluating their successes and suggesting improvements / Student begins to present their work to a fellow classmate and explains the learning process they went through. Student partially completes a peer evaluation of a classmate evaluating their successes and suggesting improvements / Student presents their work to a fellow classmate and explains the learning process they went through. Student completes a peer evaluation of a classmate evaluating their successes and suggesting improvements / Student presents their work to a fellow classmate and also uses their work in an external class to enhance their learning. Student completes an informative peer evaluation of a classmate.
