Project 2 – Canadian Identity through music

Select a region from Canadian music from the list below. Research that region, the common styles in that region, the unique styles in that region, the common themes in the music from the region, and some of the well-known musicians from that regions. Create a visual presentation highlighting the music from your region. Make sure to have examples.

Make sure to answer the following questions on your region’s musical genres:

1.  What impact does the region’s heritage have on the musical styles?

2.  Do the main styles of musical genres represent Canadian Identity?

3.  Are all Canadians represented in the most popular styles or groups of people?

4.  Are Canadian or regional stereotypes reflected in the music in the popular genres of the region? (stereotypes based on religion, way of life, habits, customs, economic status)

5.  What genres or styles are popular to the region?

TIPS on creating your presentation:

Choose a font style, and font size, that your audience can read from a distance. / ·  Choosing the right font style, such as Helvetica or Arial, and the right font size, helps to get your message across. Avoid narrow fonts and avoid fonts that include fancy edges.
Keep your text simple by using bullet points or short sentences.
Do not READ the presentation / ·  Use bullets or short sentences, Try to keep each to one line;
·  You want your audience to listen to you present your information, NOT read the screen. Practice the presentation so that you can speak from bullet points.
·  The audience came to hear you not read your slides.
·  Remove articles such as "a" and "the" to help reduce the word count on a line.
Use art, and images to help reinforce your message / ·  Use graphics to help tell your story. Make sure to use meaningful pictures. Don't overwhelm your audience by adding too many graphics to a slide, however.
Words + Images > Words / ·  Visualize what you will say, and how it will be portrayed. Combine both words and images rather.
Check the spelling and grammar. / ·  Always check the spelling and grammar in your presentation so as to make sure it does not detract from the presentation’s message.
Make slide backgrounds subtle and keep them consistent. / ·  Choose an attractive, engaging,templateorbackground. Be careful that the background doesn’t detract from your message.
Use high contrast between background color and text color. / ·  Preset themes automatically set the contrast between a light background with dark colored text or dark background with light colored text. If you create your own background, make sure the text and background colors contrast.
Expand on the images / ·  Discuss the images that have been included within the presentation. All images should have a purpose and be explained to the audience.
