It is commonly agreed that the UK’s future in terms of employment and economic growth will depend heavily on the development of the small to medium sized enterprise (SME) sector and a more entrepreneurial society. A recent survey conducted by HSBC revealed that 64% of 16-24 year olds wanted to start their own business. Shell LiveWIRE’s own research into student’s attitudes to starting their own business also showed that the majority viewed the option very positively.

The aim of the Enterprise Awareness pilot programme is to raise awareness and embed the active promotion of business creation in HEIs through training programmes, the production of institutional development plans and the provision of access to resource materials and support networks.

The objectives are to build on the previous work of the project partners and include:

  • the delivery of a training programme for academic and support staff working with students;
  • the production and dissemination of training materials tailored to the needs of HEIs;
  • to support the production of enterprise development plans in each HEI, in order to provide a focal point for institutional and departmental enterprise related initiatives.

There are three partners involved in Enterprise Awareness, Shell LiveWIRE, Young Enterprise and STEP (the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme). Between them, they can claim over 60 years success in running both national and international programmes to enable young people to learn, grow and explore enterprise for themselves.

The University, through its Excellence Plus Strategy, is committed to ensuring that students will be provided with opportunities to consider all aspects of employment prospects including self-employment as a valid career option. The workshops, aimed at personal and placement tutors, will offer training and guidance material to staff involved in providing students with personal and career development planning.

If you are interested in attending this event please complete the tear off slip and return to Julie Hodgson, ASSUby Friday 15 March 2002. A more detailed programme, including a questionnaire circulated by the Development Manager, will be sent to participants nearer the time.
